Teacher receives national award
A Tucson teacher has been honored for her inspiration and dedication to educating students.
Melanie Donaldson, a sixth-grade teacher at Centennial Elementary School, was awarded the California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence and is one of 46 public school educators in the nation to be chosen.
Donaldson received $500 and will be honored at the National Education Association Foundationβs Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D.C., in February.
βStudents inspire me with their grit in the face of challenges, their trust, their willingness and their resilience,β Donaldson said in a news release.
Marana bus to provide free meals over break
Free meals will be provided to children Oct. 8-12 by the Marana Care Mobile during Marana School Districtβs fall break.
The mobile meal unit provides interior and exterior serving, wi-fi and literacy encouragement for children. The schedule each day will be:
- 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Sandario Road and Anthony Road (southeast corner next to the Marana Congregation of Jehovahβs Witness Church).
- 12:30-1:30 p.m.: 6560 W. El Tiro Road (at the Marana Domestic Water Improvement District).
The Marana School District began serving meals at no charge from the retrofitted bus in 2015. It says some 6,822 meals have been served.
Anti-graffiti poster contest looking for young artists
Young artists are invited to share their creativity through Pima Countyβs Taking Action Against Graffiti (TAGG) program.
The contest is open to youths ages 9 to 18 who will create effective anti-graffiti messages. The submission deadline is Oct. 31 at 5 p.m.
The posters will be distributed to public libraries, schools and at various community events. Contest guidelines and submission information are available at www.pima.gov/graffiti
Finalists will be chosen from each of five age groups: 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18. The top prize is worth up to $100. Runners-up will be awarded prizes up to $25.
