Marana student gets top competitor nod
Ironwood Elementary student Adam Velazco was named to a list of the Top 300 competitors in the Broadcom Masters, a science, technology, engineering and math competition for middle-schoolers.
The program, founded and produced by the Society for Science & the Public, seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators to solve the grand challenges of the 21st century.
The Top 300 Broadcom Masters represent schools from 35 states. They were selected from a pool of 2,537 applicants.
The competitors were evaluated by a panel of scientists, engineers and educators and judged on creativity and originality of their science fair project, their ability to engage in analysis of data and understanding of STEM principles as they relate to the real world.
Credit union awards $8K in scholarships
Four Arizona high school graduates were awarded scholarships of $2,000 each by Pima Federal Credit Union.
The students are Garrett Hesselink, a graduate of Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, who will attend Oklahoma Christian University; Hayden Nardozza, a graduate of Basis Oro Valley, who will attend Arizona State University; Joanna Szolowicz, a homeschooled student who will attend Northern Arizona University; and Trevor Ballejos, a graduate of St. John’s High School, who will attend Grand Canyon University.
Young Entrepreneurs Academy seeks talent
Young Entrepreneurs Academy is conducting a “talent search” for America’s next top young entrepreneurs.
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is recruiting motivated, talented kids between the ages of 11 and 18 to apply.
Selected applicants will be taught how to come up with a great idea, pitch to investors, get real funding and launch a real business or non-profit in less than 100 hours.

Education foundation selects new director
The Educational Enrichment Foundation has selected Leslie Edwards to be its new executive director.
Edwards replaces Pamela Francis, who is retiring this year.
EEF provides financial and classroom support for Tucson Unified School District children and teachers.
Prior to joining EEF, Edwards was the accounting and stewardship manager for the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona.
The 35-year-old Educational Enrichment Foundation distributes over $400,000 in program services to TUSD students and teachers each year.
Art competition has focus on gun safety
High school students are invited to participate in an art competition focused on gun safety put on by the Pima County School Superintendent’s Office and the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
The art competition is an opportunity to encourage and showcase the creative abilities of high school students who live in Pima County, while promoting the safe storage of guns. The artwork submission deadline is October 22.
Finalists will have their artwork posted on Facebook for community voting. Prizes will be awarded at an art show at the Pima County School Superintendent’s Office.
