Laguna Elementary’s Melanie Hurst is the September teacher excellence winner.

Laguna teacher wins excellence award

Melanie Hurst, a kindergarten teacher at Laguna Elementary School in the Flowing Wells School District, was been awarded the Tucson Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot September Teacher Excellence Award.

In addition to serving on the teacher assistance team at her school, Hurst actively participates in the PTO and organizes a craft night each fall for students to make holiday gifts at no charge to the families.

Hurst was nominated by her colleague, Kristi Gutierrez.

β€œMrs. Hurst is involved in all aspects of our school. She creates fun, engaging, hands-on lessons for her growing kinders,” Gutierrez said.

Tucson Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot spotlight quality Southern Arizona teachers every month. Teachers are nominated through the Tucson Values Teachers’ website by colleagues, students, friends and community members. Winners receive a $100 gift card from OfficeMax/Office Depot, $250 cash courtesy of Tucson Electric Power and the Helios Education Foundation, and school supplies.

TUSD offers tablets

for all K-3 children

This school year, the Tucson Unified School District has made an effort to incorporate technology in all kindergarten through third-grade classrooms by providing students with tablets to enhance their education.

The district is also making literacy instruction a priority by actively engaging teachers in professional development opportunities, as well as providing digital resources to support the successful implementation of the K-3 tablets.
