Laguna teacher wins excellence award
Melanie Hurst, a kindergarten teacher at Laguna Elementary School in the Flowing Wells School District, was been awarded the Tucson Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot September Teacher Excellence Award.
In addition to serving on the teacher assistance team at her school, Hurst actively participates in the PTO and organizes a craft night each fall for students to make holiday gifts at no charge to the families.
Hurst was nominated by her colleague, Kristi Gutierrez.
βMrs. Hurst is involved in all aspects of our school. She creates fun, engaging, hands-on lessons for her growing kinders,β Gutierrez said.
Tucson Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot spotlight quality Southern Arizona teachers every month. Teachers are nominated through the Tucson Values Teachersβ website by colleagues, students, friends and community members. Winners receive a $100 gift card from OfficeMax/Office Depot, $250 cash courtesy of Tucson Electric Power and the Helios Education Foundation, and school supplies.

TUSD offers tablets
for all K-3 children
This school year, the Tucson Unified School District has made an effort to incorporate technology in all kindergarten through third-grade classrooms by providing students with tablets to enhance their education.
The district is also making literacy instruction a priority by actively engaging teachers in professional development opportunities, as well as providing digital resources to support the successful implementation of the K-3 tablets.
