Two men have been arrested on suspicion ofΒ first-degree murder in the shooting death of a young womanΒ earlier this year.
On March 5, just after 10 p.m., Tucson police were called to a mobile home park in the 2100 block of South Cottonwood Lane for reports of an unresponsive woman.
The woman, later identified as 22-year-old Daniza Ferrales Sanchez, was found dead inside a vehicle. Around the same time, a man, identified as Sanchezβ boyfriend, had arrived at a local hospital with gunshot trauma. Police determined the two incidents were connected.
Officers learned that Sanchez, her boyfriend, and an unidentified man were in the area of East Benson Highway and South Bonney Avenue when the alleged shooters approached the vehicle,Β attempted to rob the unidentified man inside and shots were fired.
Detectives determinedΒ that Jose DeJesus Contreras, 36, had coordinated the robbery, but had since died of a drug overdose.
The two alleged shooters were identified as Juan Francisco Verdugo, 31, and Raul Francisco Gomez, 22.
On July 4, Verdugo wasΒ interviewed by police and arrested on suspicion ofΒ first-degree felony murder. Gomez was taken into custody on July 17 and is also being held on first-degree felony murder and other unrelated charges.
Detectives are still working to locate the unidentified man who was inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
