A man was shot and killed Friday night by Tucson police after they say he refused repeated commands to drop a knife.

The incident started about 7:45 p.m. when a 911 caller reported that a man who appeared agitated was pacing near a home in the 2700 block of South Park Avenue, near East 36th Street, Tucson police said in a news release.

The man pulled out a knife when contacted by uniformed officers, who tried to deescalate the confrontation but eventually used non-lethal devices, like a Taser and pepperball launcher, on the man but they were ineffective, the release said.

"The suspect again produced the knife at the officers which resulted in an officer-involved shooting," the release said.

Police immediately rendered first aid, but the man died later at the hospital, the release said.

No one else was injured.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, which investigates local officer-involved shootings, has been activated to handle the criminal investigation. The Oro Valley Police Department has been assigned to be the lead investigative agency for the incident.
