New details in shooting that injured two Pima County sheriff's deputies

New details about a late December shooting that left two Pima County sheriff’s deputies injured have been released by the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.

The team gave the following account in a news release late Thursday:

Jordyn Guadalupe Sanchez, 29, showed up at a home in the 9200 block of North Kanawha Street around 7:15 p.m. on Dec. 21 and tried to leave with a small child he no longer has custody of.

Deputies Leonardo Wells, a two-year Sheriff’s Department veteran, and Jaylon McEuen, a one-year veteran, were called to the scene and attempted to place Sanchez under arrest.

Sanchez resisted and the struggle inside the home spilled outdoors, where shots were eventually fired between Sanchez and the deputies. All three men were struck and injured; Sanchez was struck by Wells’ gunfire, according to the news release.

Sanchez took off despite his injuries and was found just down the street by additional responding deputies.

Wells, McEuen and Sanchez were taken to a hospital for treatment.

McKuen and Wells were released after several days of being treated for their wounds.

Sanchez was discharged from the hospital and booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of felony endangerment, discharging a firearm at an occupied structure, prohibited possessor, and custodial interference.

Court records indicate Sanchez remains at the jail and is being held without bond.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, known as PRCIT, was activated as is standard procedure. Its aim is to have an independent law enforcement agency take the lead in criminal investigations of critical incidents involving member agencies. The Tucson Police Department has been assigned primary responsibility for the criminal investigation of this shooting. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a separate administrative investigation to examine the actions of its personnel.

All findings will be presented to the Pima County Attorney’s Office when the investigation is complete.
