A Tucson elementary school was placed on lockdown after a man who claimed to have an explosive device in his backpack assaulted three employees while trying to get inside, police say.

The incident started about 10 a.m. Wednesday when Joshua Aaron Downing, 44, tried to get inside Anna Henry Elementary School, 650 N. Igo Way, near East Speedway and North Harrison Road, Tucson police said Thursday in a news release.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown as was nearby Sahuaro High School, police said in the release.

A crisis intervention team, consisting of members from the hostage negotiations unit and eventually made contact with Downing and he surrendered.

No explosive device was found.

Downing was arrested on suspicion of felonies that included interfering with an educational institution and making a terrorist threat.
