A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after Tucson police say he killed a man during a fight Friday afternoon on the city's south side.

Officers went to the area of South 13th Avenue and West Drexel Road about 2:15 p.m. for a reported assault, the department says in a news release.

They found Ray Bernal Jr., 22, wounded. He was declared dead at the scene, the release said.

Detectives with the department's robbery/assault unit were nearby on an unrelated call and jumped in to help on the case before homicide detectives could arrive.

Soon after Daniel Gonzales was arrested at a house in the 5100 block of South 11th Avenue.

Gonzales was booked into the Pima County jail on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping.
