A man wanted in connection with a killing early Wednesday in Tucson was shot and wounded hours later in a high-speed chase near Bisbee, authorities say.

Christopher Kershaw, 58, was arguing with a woman about 5:30 a.m. at a house in the 5300 Block of East Fifth Street when her male companion shot and killed him, Tucson police said Thursday in a news release.

The pair fled before police arrived.

Investigators later identified the vehicle in which the pair fled from the shooting and shared the information with the Sierra Vista Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Tucson police said.

About 7:30 p.m., a man driving the car police were looking for was spotted on Naco Highway near Bisbee. Cochise County deputies tried to stop the car, according to a separate news release issued by the Sierra Vista Police Department, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and the Bisbee Police Department.

They said the driver, the sole occupant of the car, refused to stop, prompting a chase. The unidentified driver fired at pursuing officers while driving erratically at high speeds on the highway, the release said.

At some point the driver was shot, lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

He was flown to a Tucson hospital where he remained in police custody.

Officials in Tucson and Cochise county said Thursday evening that the name of the man tied to the Tucson killing is being withheld because he has not yet been charged.

Officers directly involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
