Tucson's largest homeless encampment was cleared out Tuesday ahead of the city constructing a bike park on the site.

The 100-Acre Wood, often called “The Acres” is located near the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and has become Tucson’s largest homeless encampment over the years.

Bridgett Marie moves her belongings out of the 100-Acre Wood Tuesday. The city is building a bike park on what once was Tucson's largest homeless camp.

Tuesday's sweep, the final and largest of three phases over the last 18 months, is part of the city's effort to renovate the area's mountain biking trails.

Construction on the site begins Wednesday and is expected to last through spring next year, according to the city.

Roughly 40 people still remained at the encampment during Tuesday's final clear-out. About six were taken to housing they had already been signed up for. About four were taken to detox or shelter services.

The 100-Acre Wood Bike Park's original trails were constructed by the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists on the land owned by Davis-Monthan Air Force Base that's leased to the city. Master planning of the bike park began in 2014, and was adopted by the city in 2018.

The project received $116,000 from Trek to build new trails and also received a $170,000 grant for the project, the Star previously reported.

City workers clear tents and other items Tuesday at the 100-Acre Wood, the former site of a huge homeless camps near the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

City crews began clearing the northern portion of the encampment, called Zone 1, in May so Davis-Monthan Air Force Base could begin testing the area for PFAS chemicals. That resulted in about two dozen people moving out, city officials believed at the time. Zone 2, the southern portion of the encampment which runs along East Golf Links Road, had been closed in mid-March.

Through July this year, city departments, the county health department and local non-profit partners spent more than 1,800 hours at the site conducting outreach, like offering shelter, detox, medical help and an assortment of social service assistance.
