A 66-year-old man was killed early Tuesday when police say he crashed into a traffic sign on Tucson's south side.

William Charles Carter crashed into a sign at the northwest corner of South Sixth Avenue and West Aho Way about 3:00 a.m., Tucson police said in a news release.

Carter, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the crash scene. No other vehicles were involved, the release said.

Investigators say Carter was headed west on Ajo Way when he lost control and struck the sign. Drugs were in the driver’s system prior to the crash but it was unknown if that, or a medical condition were factors in the crash, the release said.

The investigation continues.
