Juan Ciscomani is not moderate

Who is Juan Ciscomani? He’s running for re-election in CD 6 against Kirsten Engel. He tells voters he’s a moderate, but he’s not.

He is a member of the Republican Study Committee that supports repealing the corporate minimum tax. The Committee favors eliminating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to allow unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices in the financial services industry. They also favor eliminating the National Labor Relations Board and weakening labor unions.

The Committee supports reducing protections for people with pre-existing conditions and ending Medicare’s ability to negotiate drug prices. They would transition Medicare to a model subsidizing private Medicare Advantage plans, which would privatize Medicare and make health outcomes much worse in our country.

The Committee also wants to outlaw abortion from the moment of conception and put the IVF procedure at risk.

Vote for Kirsten Engel! She stands for the values that matter to you — make your voice count with someone who truly represents what you want!

Abortion

Don't like abortion? Just ignore it like you do the school shootings. And get over it. It's a fact of life.

Gun pandemic

In the last few weeks there have been two shooting incidents at a Donald Trump rally or property. The perpetrators in both situations were using high-power AR 15 rifles, developed for US military to be effective at killing a person. It is ironic that Trump and his right-wing allies have continued to oppose any gun regulations. They refused to renew the ban on these military grade weapons. While the gun lobby will rant about these dangerous shootings which could have killed Trump, it is precisely these weapons that are posing the threat. Maybe now that the danger is “hitting” so close to home they will come to the conclusion these weapons do not belong in the hands of public gun owners. Or they may resort to the “guns don’t kill people ... ” and promote more guns to protect themselves. We know how well that is working!

Grocery-store security out of control

Albertsons is putting customers in danger.

Recently, I could not enter the Albertsons I have shopped at for 40 years while raising a family because a security guard was physically assaulting a shoplifter in the doorway and screaming foul words. There was no concern shown for customers who were trying to enter or exit. This store's security guards are violent and uneducated. Oregon news reported that a violent Safeway security guard took the life of a suspected shoplifter.

I am an environmentalist and a UA grad/AZ certified teacher and parent of UA/Salpointe grads. I have biked 18 years in Tucson to role model alternative transportation. While shopping these aggressive security thugs have blocked my way while pushing my cart, stalked, harassed, and followed me out to my bike. I imagine they are targeting bike riders.

This must stop. This is un-American and that of a police state. Imagine how customers will be treated if Albertsons/Safeway merge with Kroger and take over our grocery shopping options.

JD Vance

When I read about JD Vance’s various rants about childless women, I was angry. Not just because of the mean-spiritedness of his statements, but also because of his short-sightedness. As he sees it, people without children “don’t have a direct stake in this country.” How ridiculous.

Then Vance smeared the military service of Tim Walz even as he sits on a ticket with a man who did all he could to avoid serving in the military and who has an ugly pattern of maligning others for their service. How disgusting.

I don’t know what makes Vance so angry at so many Americans who have done nothing wrong. I just know that there are two radical candidates who want to shred the fabric of our American democracy, and they are not Harris and Walz. VP Harris and Gov. Tim Walz will bring this country together.

Political strategy

I've been around since Ike was President. I followed many Presidential campaigns as a child and as an adult. I cannot remember or comprehend how cats became part of a political campaign. Cats are being used to define which women in our society care and matter to our society. Cats are also being used to dehumanize immigrant groups to support a Nazi-based doctrine of purification of our "Christian" nation. How could any sane person support a political campaign that uses cats to support their ideology? I think I will ask a cat what this all means.

Let your finger do the walking

Remember that lame phone commercial where the guy said, “can you hear me now?” It was funny the first time, but sad the next hundred times. I dislike it when phone companies come out with a new phone. We are expected to buy it, no matter what the cost/price! And a new phone means a new plug to charge it. Of course they have to make it different so they can make more money.

I am dealing with a company now whose first letter is “V” (won’t name them here, their name rhymes with Horizon). I recently found a short cord in our house and my “screen” tells me to use the correct charging cord, namely the one that came with the device. I would use the correct cord if I could find it. I charge it in a different place every time it need it.

Yes, please!

RE: the Sept. 16 letter "The debate."

The letter writer wrote "Why did you not publish the numerous lies that Kamala made in the debate? I can send them to you if you didn't understand them."

Yes, please do send us a list of all those lies, along with accurate data to back up why they are lies. What's that? A concept of the lies?

I look forward to reading your list!

Abortion

Kari Lake says that abortion is immoral and should be illegal. What I am wondering is what she would do in the case that she were raped by an undocumented immigrant from Haiti and then became pregnant. Would she ultimately deliver the baby and care for it throughout its childhood?

See something, Say something

A sharp-eyed woman rose to the occasio.n during the assassination attempt Sunday afternoon at Donald Trump on his golf course. She was in the parking lot and noticed a man bursting from the bushes and wildly running to his car at top speed. Experts maintain that a walking man will not attract attention, but a running man will always raise suspicions. As he jumped into the car, she snapped a photo. When he sped away, she had the foresight to photograph the rear license plate, which she immediately shared with police now charging through the foliage. The authorities immediately sent the photo on, and the suspect was apprehended on the northbound turnpike. Probably thought he'd gotten away with it. Given the climate that we live in now, I note that she has not been identified. I hope they continue to keep her identity private, shielding her from the possibility of abusive phone calls or other dangerous incidents.

Would any of us been able to act so swiftly?

Engel turns negative

Every election cycle I try to tune out the negative rhetoric. But I have to speak up against the negative ads Kirsten Engel has launched against Congressman Juan Ciscomani. They feel too personal and go way too far. She wants to paint a grim picture of Juan as an extremist, when all you have to do is meet Juan to know he is a regular person who is doing his best to serve our community and raise his family. Tucson is like a long high school hallway. There are one or two degrees of separation between people. We can read through the lies, and frankly we don’t like it, regardless of our party affiliation. Whether you vote for him or not, Juan is an incredibly decent man, father and husband. I just can’t stomach these attacks on one of our own.

Kevin Volk for District 17

District 17 voters can vote for Democrat Kevin Volk for the Arizona House. A native Tucsonan, Kevin worked in Gabrielle Giffords' DC Congressional office, taught fifth grade, and now works for Volk Commercial Real Estate here in Tucson. He has created a small business to develop affordable, sustainable, prefabricated housing.

Kevin will work for quality education, women's reproductive rights, a safe and secure water supply, alleviate climate change, and promote affordable housing; he will look for ways to bring down our cost of living.

We need young, positive, energetic people like Kevin in our Legislature. Vote for Kevin Volk for District 17 on November 5!

Encouraging respectful discourse

Re: the Sept. 15 article "In these divisive times, Americans need our dads."

In her guest opinion, Heather Mace encouraged readers to "stay politically engaged while maintaining harmony ..." Many letters to the editor have also issued pleas for civility. Braver Angels is a national organization, with a Tucson chapter, whose goal is to "bridge the partisan divide for the good of our democratic republic". It is a great resource. Please consider subscribing to their newsletter, joining and/or participating in their events. Our society can only benefit from our participation in such endeavors.
