Pima Community College’s track and field team returned to Tucson this week with a new school record and a few national qualifying times after competing in La Jolla, California, last weekend.

At the Triton Invitational at the University of California San Diego last week, Pima freshman Taylor Brown set a school record in the 400 meter with a time of 46.65 seconds.

The previous record was held by Juan Duarte in 2001 with a time of 47.09 seconds, according to a press release from Pima Athletics.

Brown’s record marks his second school record broken this season so far. He broke the school record for the 200 meters with a lightning-fast time of 21.11 seconds at the Willie Williams Invitational earlier this year.

The No. 4 Aztecs include a few familiar faces from Tucson high schools, including Connor Grusendorf (Mica Mountain), Jackson Koontz (Salpointe Catholic) and Nathaniel Curtiss (Rincon/University).

Grusendorf, a freshman, set two NJCAA outdoor national qualifiers, according to Pima Athletics. He completed the 1,500-meter race with a qualifying time of 3:56.39. In his second race, a 5,000-meter trek, he recorded a time of 14:59.50.

Salpointe Catholic alum Koontz took eighth place in the 5,000-meter race with a national qualifying time of 14:56.13.

Ironwood Ridge alum Reatta Danhof set a national qualifying time and a personal best in the 800-meter race. She finished with a time of 2:18.66.Β 

Curtiss, a sophomore, took third place in the high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters or 6 feet, 9 inches. His initial national qualifier of 2.05 meters (6 feet, 8.75 inches) was set at the Willie Williams Invitational.

Pima now has a total of 14 national qualifying times.

On the women’s side, Ironwood Ridge alum Reatta Danhof set a national qualifying time and a personal best in the 800-meter race. She finished with a time of 2:18.66.

The sophomore is now third in Pima’s outdoor season school history. She claimed the school record for the 800 meters during the school’s indoor season with a time of 2:21.32.

She also improved her national qualifying time in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:50.78, moving her to the No. 8 spot in Pima’s outdoor all-time list.

The No. 2-ranked women’s team currently has 11 NJCAA national qualifying times this season.

The Aztecs are set to compete at the GCC Outdoor Invitational on Saturday at Glendale Community College.
