Derick Ivan Hernandez Burruel

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in the killing of another teen earlier this month at a neighborhood park on the city's south side, Tucson police say.

Derick Ivan Hernandez Burruel was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first degree murder and booked into the Pima County jail, Tucson police said Thursday in a news release. The Star is naming the teen due to the seriousness of the charges he faces.

The shooting happened about 7:15 p.m. Jan. 17 at Manuel Herrera Jr. Park in the 5900 block of South Fiesta Avenue, south of West Drexel Road. Burruel is accused of shooting Daniel Anthony Arriaga, 18, when the pair met at the park for a "pre-planned transaction," the release said.

Arriaga was shot during an argument and was found wounded in the back seat of a car. The gunman fled before police arrived. Arriaga died at the hospital on Jan. 19, the release said.

On Wednesday, detectives obtained an arrest warrant accusing Burruel of first degree murder and attempted robbery in connection with the case, the release said. Burruel was apprehended the same day and booked into jail. Bond was set at $1 million.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line.
