Desierto Books will specialize in hard-to-find first editions and other rare books that appeal to collectors and literary enthusiasts.

A new literary haven is preparing to make its debut in Tucson, offering book lovers a chance to explore and purchase rare, new and used books with a unique focus on the Southwest.

Desierto Books, set to open at the MSA Annex at the end of March, is the brainchild of local book enthusiast Cheron Taylor, whose vision is to create a space where the community can connect with both the written word and the cultural tapestry of the region.

Desierto Books is not just another bookstore — it’s a celebration of the literary voices and traditions of the Southwest, Taylor emphasized. With a curated collection that highlights both contemporary and classic authors from the region, the store will feature books that showcase the diverse narratives and histories that define the Southwest.

“We wanted to create a space that reflects the unique stories and voices of this region,” Taylor said. “The Southwest has such a rich literary history, and we believe there’s a growing interest in works that dive into the complexities of this landscape, culture and history. Our collection will reflect that, with everything from contemporary writers to books that explore local history, folklore and the land itself.”

For those with a preference for rare and used books, Desierto Books will be a “treasure trove,” Taylor added. The store will specialize in hard-to-find first editions and other rare books that appeal to collectors and literary enthusiasts. Taylor, a seasoned book collector herself, says every book in the store is chosen with care and attention to detail.

“We want to offer something for everyone,” Taylor said. “Whether you’re looking for a beloved classic or a hidden gem, we’ve handpicked books that have a special place in the literary world. For collectors, it’s about finding that one elusive book they’ve been searching for.”

In addition to its extensive collection for adults, Desierto Books will feature a dedicated children’s section designed to inspire young readers. The section will include picture books, early readers, chapter books and young adult fiction, offering something for every age group.

Taylor hopes to foster a love of reading in the next generation, with books that reflect diverse experiences and celebrate the joys of imagination.

With a curated collection that highlights both contemporary and classic authors from the region, Desierto Books will feature books that showcase the diverse narratives and histories that define the Southwest.

“We want to make sure that children have access to books that not only entertain but also educate and inspire,” Taylor said. “Our children’s section will offer a wide variety of stories — from timeless classics to newer works by emerging authors. We believe in the power of books to open young minds and we’re excited to be part of that journey.”

Desierto Books is committed to being more than just a bookstore; it’s envisioned as a community hub where book lovers can come together to celebrate their shared love of literature, Taylor added.

In addition to its carefully curated selection of books, the store plans to host a variety of events including author readings, book signings and other events highlighting Tucson’s literary community. Taylor envisions a space where locals can gather to share stories, meet authors and discover new books in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

“We want to create a space that feels like home for people,” Taylor said. “It’s about building connections and fostering a community around books and ideas. We’re really looking forward to bringing people together and contributing to the cultural vibrancy of Tucson.”

Desierto Books will open its doors at the MSA Annex, 267 S. Avenida Del Convento, Tucson’s creative hub known for its eclectic mix of art spaces, food vendors and community events.

“I really don't think we could have found a better spot,” Taylor said.

An official open date hasn’t been announced yet but Taylor plans to soft open by the end of March. For updates, visit their website or follow them on Instagram. Desierto Books will also have a table at this weekend’s Tucson Festival of Books where they will highlight some of the store’s offerings.
