For at least one Saturday this April, the historic Chicago Music Store building downtown will again have visitors wandering through its doors.
The biannual market Cultivate will inhabit the building at 130 E. Congress St. on Saturday, April 21. The market showcases some of Tucson's best makers and artisans in funky spaces near the city's center.
Last winter for its holiday market, Cultivate took over "The Mill" at 219 N. Third Ave., another abandoned space. This will be the fifth Cultivate market.
"We're usually looking for a building with a lot of history or an unknown past ... and we really love looking at different neighborhoods," said Cultivate co-founder Claire Seizovic.
The Chicago Music Store closed its doors the spring of 2016 and moved to a smaller downtown location at 45 S. Sixth Ave. (it has a second location at 5646 E. Speedway). It had been in building on Congress Street since 1967 after doing business from three other downtown-area locations. It has been open since 1918, according to Arizona Daily Star archives.
The building that will host Cultivate this spring was constructed in 1903. It is currently vacant.
"How cool is it to have our fifth market in a super iconic, historic space right downtown, kind of hidden in plain sight?" Seizovic said.
