The simple lines of the Janssen house blend well with the desert setting. The steel posts and beams are painted yellow; walls are mortar-washed brick and glass. The winged skylight on top admits light without the glare of the sun.

This is the expandable house designed by Edward Nelson, AIA, and built by Irving Buchman. As family needs grow, so will the house, with the addition of a new living room, bedrooms and baths already planned. Plumbing and electrical fixtures are installed, ready to be used when needed. Note the kitchen. The walls do not reach the ceiling so that it seems to float between the living and dining areas.

Little Kathy Janssen finds this sliding shelf-step makes brushing her teeth and washing her hands much easier. This way she can reach the bowl and faucets all by herself, without any help. The shelf is one of the convenience features in the house which Edward H. Nelson, AIA, designed for her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pierre M. Janssen.

The compact kitchen seems quite spacious and airy with its open ceiling and the skylight above. The controls for the yellow range are installed in the counter backboard, well out of reach of little hands. Blue Vinyl asbestos flooring adds a bright touch. Pass-through to the dining area saves steps.

The sliding glass front door can be covered with beige homespun draperies. Entry hallway leads to either the living room and study or the dining-play area and the bedrooms. The fir plywood partition at right separates the living room and study. It's actually a bookcase on the study side.
