St. John on the Desert parking lot sale to help the community

An expected 30 members of St. John on the Desert Presbyterian Church, 2695 N. Houghton Road, will participate in a parking lot sale 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

A portion of the proceeds from items sold will go toward organizations such as the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and Interfaith Community Services, among others, according to press materials.

Grace St. Paul’s celebrates creation with jazz Eucharist

Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams St., will celebrate Creation Sunday, 10 a.m. Sunday with its first jazz Eucharist, according to press materials. The celebration continues at 5 p.m. with a blessing of animals, according to press materials.

The church will also host Christian activist and author Mark Scandrette Friday, Oct. 9, to Sunday, Oct. 11. The Friday workshop from 7 to 9 p.m is titled “Practicing the Way of Jesus” and the Saturday workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. covers his book “Free: Spending Your Time and Money on What Matters Most.” Scandrette will also preach at the 7:45 and 10 a.m. Sunday services.

LGBT events at St. Philip’s in the Hills

St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., will host the 7th Annual Multifaith Pride Service 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8.

The service is titled “Dancing the Bridge to Wholeness” and will feature the Desert Voices and Reveille Men’s Chorus, along with speakers including Vivian Taylor, a transgender activist and former chaplain’s assistant in the military, according to press materials.

Taylor will also speak at a retreat at the church 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. The retreat is titled “Queer Christianity 101,” and the $25 fee includes lunch.

Temple Emanu-El holds service at its first home

Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road, will return to its roots for a Sabbath service 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

Rabbi Samuel Cohon, the Armon Bizman Band with Sam Golden, along with soloist Lindsey O’Shea will bring the Shabbat service to the Jewish History Museum, 564 S. Stone Ave, that was built in 1910. Temple Emanu-El made its first home there, according to press materials.

Our Mother of Sorrows Parish hosts 37th fiesta

Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, 1800 S. Kolb Road, expects more than 3,500 people to attend it 37th annual fiesta.

The free event begins 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, continues 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 and concludes 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11

Tickets will be available for purchase for food and games. Inflatables, a white elephant sale and a raffle with a $2,000 grand prize will also be part of the event.
