What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is β€œbelled.”

Last week’s recipient: Richard Stevenson.

Why: Stevenson is a member of the South Tucson Lions Club and has spearheaded an effort for vision screening for students. Since the beginning of the school year, more than 16,000 kids have been screened, Redondo wrote in the nomination letter. Stevenson also initiated a partnership with the Sunnyside Unified School District to have all its kids screened, plus provided memberships for the nurses to the National Association for School Nurses, which provides vouchers for kids to receive eye exams and glasses. He also initiated a shoe-shopping drive for needy kids within the district. Stevenson has also helped Lions clubs to promote their programs through Facebook.
