What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Deanna Slaughter.

Nominated by: Jessica Befort.

Why: For being an amazing English teacher at Flowing Wells High School. She has devoted herself to education for the past 20 years. She is one of the happiest and most encouraging person you could meet, Befort wrote in her nomination letter. “She loves her students the most, though, and fights for them on a daily basis,” Befort wrote. She helps students who have had to leave their homes, helps them find services and supports them during a difficult transition period, Befort wrote. “The students respect and love her, many affectionately referring to her as ‘Mama Slaughter,’” Befort wrote.
