Colleen Thomas, left with bell, and nominator Marcela Arizpuro.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Colleen Thomas.

Nominated by: Marcela Arizpuro.

Why: Thomas is the lead food service attendant at Mesa Verde Elementary School. Each day Thomas arrives at the Mesa Verde kitchen ready to prepare and provide a nutritious meal, Arizpuro wrote in her nomination letter. She also thinks of fun ways to engage students, most notably through her daily drawings. These whimsical pieces help create such joy and excitement for everyone, Arizpuro wrote. Her drawings are just one of the many ways she demonstrates her love and dedication to the Mesa Verde students and community. Thomas has also created a wonderful partnership with Mesa Verde’s PTO, and staff. Together, they have collaborated and developed numerous events focused on building a culture of connectedness within the community. They include the Important Person, Thanksgiving, and Christmas luncheons. These meals are opportunities for students to invite someone who is important to them to have lunch together. Colleen and the wonderful food service staff at Mesa Verde prepare hundreds of meals for these events, which often occur over several days.”Colleen’s dedication and contributions to the Mesa Verde community are greatly valued and appreciated,” Arizpuro wrote.
