Elephant at Reid Park Zoo

The still-unnamed new elephant is big for a baby — but small compared with an adult.

Tucson, get ready to meet the baby.

Today at 8:30 a.m. Arizona’s first baby elephant will make her public debut at Reid Park Zoo, weather permitting. Keepers will let her into the main exhibit, where she will romp every day from 8 to 11 a.m. until hours change in October.

The zoo had concerns that Odile would drench and muddy up the elephant habitat, but because the storm mostly bypassed Tucson, keepers are excited to let the 4-week-old baby explore.

On Saturday, the zoo will host a celebration from 8 to 11 a.m. with crafts, activities and information stations.

If you want to help name the baby, go to tucson.com/elephant to vote from two choices picked by the zoo.

The zoo opens at 8 a.m. Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for children 2 to 14, and $7 for adults 62 and older. For more information, go online to reidparkzoo.org
