A driver was arrested in suspicion of second degree murder after Tucson police say he smashed into a pickup truck that had pulled over due to a flat tire, killing the man sitting inside the disabled vehicle.

About 3 a.m. Saturday, Mark William Haffner, 64, pulled into the the right shoulder of East Aviation Parkway, just east of the Kino Parkway overpass, after the 1998 Toyota Tacoma he was driving got a flat tire, Tucson police said in a news release.

While Haffner was sitting inside the Toyota, the driver of a bronze 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Carlos Samaniego Jr., swerved into the lane and smashed into the Toyota.

Haffner was killed in the crash.

Samaniego, 34, was later determined to be impaired, the release said.

He was booked into the Pima County jail.

The crash still is being investigated.
