A 39-year-old man was shot and killed early Thursday on Tucson's west side, Tucson police say.

About 1:40 a.m., patrol officers were searching for the source of gunshots near West St. Mary's and North Silverbell roads when they learned a man who'd been shot had been dropped off at a nearby hospital, police said Thursday in a news release.

Officers went to St. Mary's Hospital and spoke to the person who drove the man to there, the release said.

Mario Peter Vega was pronounced dead at the hospital.

It's too early in the investigation to release details about the shooting, the release said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME, the anonymous tips line.
