An apparently homeless man was arrested in the slaying of a man who was buried on Tucson's northwest side, authorities said.
Daniel Lindquist, 41, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and booked into the Pima County jail, said Deputy Ryan Inglett, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
The victim, also is apparently homeless, said Inglett. Both he and Lindquist camped out in the general area where the dead man was buried, said Inglett.
A tip from a man to Tucson police led sheriff's homicide detectives to a desert area off North Oracle Road, near Las Lomitas Road shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, said Inglett.
Tucson police called deputies to assist them in the case, and the information was turned over to deputies once it was realized that the area was in the county's jurisdiction, Inglett said.
"Deputies went out and were able to locate the buried body following the smell of decomposition," said Inglett.
The body was buried in a wash area in the desert in the 5800 block of North Oracle Road.
It is believed that the body was buried for about two weeks. "We are working very closely with the medical examiner's office to try an identify the victim. Then we need to work on finding next of kin," said Inglett. He said the cause of death will be determined in an autopsy.
Additional information received by detectives led to the arrest of Lindquist, said Inglett, adding that he could not say if others were involved in the slaying.
Investigators did not release the circumstances that led to the burial, or information about how the man, who originally spoke to police, knew about the location of the body.
Investigators ask that anyone with information call 911 or 88-CRIME.
