lights and sirens

A man's body was found east of Benson early Tuesday morning, officials said.

According to the release, border patrol agents were informed of the body from a law enforcement agency in Illinois, Cochise County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carol Capas said in a news release.

Before the man died, he called his family in Illinois, the release said.

The family told law enforcement that their relative was left in a desert in Arizona. The family members "somehow provided coordinates for his location," according to the release.

Agents approached the area and located the man's body. He has been identified as 28-year-old Omar Garcia-Herrera from Guatemala. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

The sheriff's office said it appears as though Garcia-Herrera was with others crossing through the area and could have become sick due to the heat. Officials believe he died due to environmental factors, according to the release.

The body was sent to the Pima County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy. There are no signs of foul play, the release says.

The investigation is ongoing.
