STK emergency

A 68-year-old Oro Valley man was killed this weekend when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near the summit of Picacho Peak, authorities say.

James Galvin was the only person aboard the Rans S-12XL Airaile when a hiker reported it smashed into the mountain about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, said the Federal Aviation Administration.

The crash prompted the closure of Picacho Peak State Park, which is about 45 miles north of Tucson

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

An NTSB investigator arrived Sunday to begin documenting the crash scene and examining the wreckage, authorities said.

A preliminary report on the accident is to be released within 30 days.

Witnesses or anyone with information should contact witness@ntsb.gov, the NTSB says.
