A pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV driven by an allegedly impaired driver in midtown early Thursday, Tucson police said.
The collision occurred about 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of East Speedway and North Dodge Boulevard when 70-year-old Deidree Ann Markin was hit by a black 2003 Nissan Pathfinder, police said.
Markin was pronounced dead at the scene.
A subsequent investigation determined Markin was using a marked crosswalk with a High Intensity Activated CrossWalk (HAWK) signal activated when she was struck by the westbound Nissan, police said in a news release.
An officer from the Tucson Police Department's Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit evaluated the man who was driving the Nissan and determined he was impaired at the time of the collision, police said. "Detectives are awaiting the toxicology results to determine the appropriate charges for the driver of the Nissan," the TPD news release said.
Failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and impaired driving are the major contributing factors in the collision, police said.
