I was as horrified by the Sandy Hook massacre as anyone, but your Dec. 18 cartoon blaming the National Rifle Association was shameful and preposterous. For 141 years, the NRA has served our nation by enhancing military and law enforcement preparedness, the shooting sports and gun safety. They provide free consultation on request to federal, state and municipal lawmakers to improve and coordinate safe gun laws. NRA-certified instructors volunteer at many public ranges to ensure safety on the line. NRA's “Eddie Eagle” van travels to teach gun safety to school children where they live.
The board of directors consists of 75 doctors, lawyers, military and police officers, educators, even a few legislators and media personalities. Each one is so highly qualified that the annual re-election or replacement of 25 directors creates hard choices for millions of voting members at large. Once I had to pass on bigger-than-life actor/sportsman Tom Selleck because 25 others looked even better (he's on the board now). Wouldn't it be nice if we could feel that good about our politicians?
