I am a life member of the National Rifle Association, enjoy hunting and the shooting sports, own rifles, shotguns and handguns, some semiautomatic, but none of what are being called "assault rifles." With that said, I readily admit that the NRA can be and has been somewhat rabid in its opposition to any form of gun control. While I believe they do an admirable job protecting the right to own guns, encouraging participation in hunting and shooting sports and, above all, promoting firearms safety, I do not always agree with NRA's stance on some issues.

But the editorial cartoon in your Dec. 18 issue purporting to lay all the blame for recent mass shootings on the NRA doorstep was as rabid, if not more so, as anything the NRA has ever said or done. Thoughtful, intelligent discourse on this issue is what is needed now, not mindless finger pointing.
