The unmistakable charm of handmade quilts, with their intricate patterns and vibrant colors, will once again grace Tucsonโs southwest side as the Cactus Quilters of Rincon Country West host their 28th Annual Quilt Show.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, from noon to 4 p.m. at Rincon Country West RV Resort, 4555 S. Mission Road, the community is invited to experience an afternoon filled with beauty, creativity and warmth โ qualities that define the quilting tradition itself. Admission is free.
The Cactus Quilters have built a reputation over the years not just for their beautiful work but for their spirit of inclusivity and support for one another. Their quilt show has grown into a beloved event that showcases more than just an art form โ it highlights the power of community, skill and the joy of shared passions, said Angie Ulseth, a member of the group and a longtime quilter.
The highlight of the show will be the spectacular array of quilts crafted by the members of the Cactus Quilters. Attendees can expect to see an eclectic mix of pieces, ranging from traditional designs like star patterns and floral motifs, to modern and abstract quilts that push the boundaries of color and texture to nontraditional quilts made into clothes and accessories. Some of the items will be for sale.
For Ulseth, the show offers a chance to both showcase her latest works as well as share the beauty of quilting with a wider audience.
"Thereโs so much pride in being able to share our creations with the public," Ulseth said. "Each quilt tells a unique story, and thatโs part of the magic of this art form. Some of these quilts have taken months to complete and itโs incredibly rewarding to see people appreciate the time, effort and skill that goes into each stitch."
One of the most exciting aspects of the event is the contributions that go to local charities. While much of the show will act as a gallery, the larger pieces will be donated to charity.

Among the most anticipated festivities of the show are the raffles, where attendees will have the chance to win prizes.
The groupโs comfort quilts are given to local RCW residents as they recover from surgery or illness. These quilts are also donated to the Ronald McDonald House, Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse and the local veteransโ hospital.
There are also children's quilts that support the children of the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind. The group also crafts pet beds that are donated to Cody's Friends and area animal shelters, according to Ulseth.
โI just love seeing the wide variety of quilted items and quilts that are made every year,โ Ulseth said. โWe have some really talented people here and so it's just fun to see how the different quilts reflect the different personalities of the quilters. You get some that are what you think of as the more traditional quilts that you maybe would see on your grandma's bed and then you get quilts that are art quilts and modern quilts, itโs just such a wide variety and it's so fun to see what everyone comes up with.โ
The quilts on display reflect not only the diverse interests and influences of the quilters but also the range of techniques and materials used, Ulseth added. Whether it's a hand-stitched family heirloom, a contemporary piece made with new, eco-friendly fabrics or a whimsical design featuring playful patterns, there's something for everyone.
Some quilts feature intricate handwork that spans weeks, even months, of dedication, while others use innovative techniques such as machine quilting or modern art quilting, Ulseth said. The show will also feature attendee voting across 14 categories instead of the usual judging panel.
โAnybody that walks in the door to view the quilts is handed a ballot and they have a chance to vote for their favorite quilt in 14 different categories,โ Ulseth said. โWe have some based on size, some based on technique or a wearable arts category or home decor category but everybody gets a vote. At the end we have some ribbons that are made by members and given out to the top three winners in each of the 14 categories.โ
The event will feature a food truck, boutique items to purchase, engaging conversations with quilters and a โfun, welcoming vibe.โ Ulseth adds, "This is a chance for people to connect โ whether you're a quilter yourself, a fan of the craft or just curious about quilting, everyone is invited to come and enjoy the show."
Among the most anticipated festivities are the raffles, where attendees will have the chance to win prizes. At the top of the list are three stunning, hand-crafted quilts created by members of the club. Mini raffles are also planned, according to Ulseth.
Proceeds from the raffles go toward supporting the club's ongoing efforts in the community, including charitable initiatives such as donating quilts to local shelters, hospitals and veterans' organizations.
The raffles have become a tradition, with many attendees eagerly purchasing tickets for a chance to take home a quilt of their own. Itโs not only a way to win a beautiful piece of art but an opportunity to contribute to a good cause that supports those in need, Ulseth added.
The Cactus Quilters of Rincon Country West have been fostering a love for quilting for nearly three decades and the annual quilt show is a testament to the group's continued dedication to preserving the tradition of quilting while embracing new ideas and techniques.
What started as a small group of quilters sharing their passion for the craft has since grown into a thriving community organization that welcomes members of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned quilters.
In addition to their annual quilt show, the Cactus Quilters host a range of workshops and educational programs, offering opportunities for quilters to expand their skills, try new techniques and connect with fellow enthusiasts. The club's commitment to both personal growth and community service is central to its mission and members take pride in supporting one another in both their creative and charitable endeavors.
"Quilting has been such a gift in my life," Ulseth said. "Itโs not just about making something beautiful; itโs about the friendships, the connections and the sense of giving back to the community."
