Jackie Nichols, a social-studies and Future Cities program teacher at Lauffer Middle School in the Sunnyside Unified School District, has been selected for the January Teacher Excellence Award.

The honor, from Tucson Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot, comes with a $250 cash award, a $100 gift card for school supplies, a plaque, flowers and doughnuts to share with her class.

Jenni Roberts, who nominated Nichols, described her as a β€œdedicated teacher with a passion for helping students learn and find many different paths to success by accentuating their unique strengths and encouraging their individuality.” To nominate a teacher for the honor, visit TucsonValuesTeachers.org

35 districts, charters have positions to fill at job fair

More than 35 school districts and charter schools from across the state will be seeking applicants at the Southern Arizona Education Job Fair.

The job fair, hosted by the Arizona Department of Education, will be held at Pima Community College’s Downtown Campus, 1255 N. Stone Ave., on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Schools will be seeking teachers from preschool to high school, academic-support positions like tutors, counselors, athletic trainers and computer techs, and support positions like food services staff, custodians and bus drivers.

Simon Youth Foundation announces scholarship

The Simon Youth Foundation, a national nonprofit that partners with public school districts to open dropout recovery academies inside Simon shopping malls, is offering a scholarship of up to $1,500 for tuition and other expenses to a graduating senior living near Tucson Premium Outlets.

The recipient will be selected based on a variety of criteria, including financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Students who are the first in their family to pursue a post-secondary education will also be given close consideration.

The application period ends on Feb. 15. Students can check their eligibility and apply online at syf.org/scholarships
