New Arizona women’s basketball coach Becky Burke didn’t have to look far to find an associate head coach.

Burke on Thursday hired Ashley Odom to that position. Odom spent the past five seasons at Texas Tech, where she was elevated to associate head coach last year.

β€œAshley brings a tremendous rΓ©sumΓ© of coaching experience to our staff,” Burke said in a news release. β€œHer time spent in the Big 12 is going to be extremely valuable to us. Ashley is a great basketball coach, elite recruiter and even better person. I couldn’t be more excited for our young women to be around her every day.”

Before working for Texas Tech, Odom spent seven years at UT Arlington. She helped the Lady Mavs win the Sun Belt regular-season championship and earn a WNIT appearance in 2018-19. She previously earned Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2017.

Odom previously coached at Lamar, where she played the final three seasons of her career.

Odom is from Mesquite, Texas, where she attended Horn High School. Her addition to the UA staff gives Burke a coach with deep ties in a state that’s become increasingly important to recruit.
