Wearing only helmets, jerseys and shorts, the Arizona Wildcats kicked off fall training camp on Wednesday at Dick Tomey Practice Fields and Davis Sports Center.
Here are notes and takeaways from Arizona's opening session of training camp, as it prepares for the season opener against Hawaii on Aug. 30.
* Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark briefly attended practice on Wednesday and walked around the Davis Sports Center with UA athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois.
* Arizona's punting competition is down to sophomore Michael Salgado-Medina, who started last year, and Melbourne, Australia native Isaac Lovison, the former Australian rules football player entering his first season with the program. Lovison unofficially had hang times of 3.34 seconds, 4.16, 4.36, 3.99 and 4.31. Salgado-Medina's hang times were 4.16 seconds, 3.71, 4.11, 3.98 and 3.64.
* Quarterback Noah Fifita threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hunter in a team period. Kansas State transfer Tre Spivey high-pointed a deep ball over freshman cornerback Gianni Edwards for a touchdown.
* Wide receiver Devin Hyatt, who suffered a gruesome leg injury in the Territorial Cup, returned to practice after missing the entirety of spring to recover from his injury.
* In one of the final team periods, cornerback Ayden Garnes jumped a pass covering Hunter and intercepted Fifita for what would've been a pick-six.
* Defensive back Treydan Stukes and offensive tackle Rhino Tapa'atoutai, who both suffered season-ending leg injuries last season, participated in practice but were limited. With Tapa'tatoutai out, Arizona's offensive line was Texas Tech transfer Ty Buchanan, former defensive tackle Chubba Ma'ae, Ka'ena Decambra, Alexander Doost and Michigan transfer Tristan Bounds.
* Arizona has 20 total offensive linemen. The UA offensive line was separated into two groups during individual periods.
