Arizona football Spring Showcase

Receiver Trey Spivey III (12) gets enough space from defensive back Elijah Brown (23) to make a catch at the University of Arizona football’s Spring Showcase, Tucson, Ariz., April 19, 2025.

In the final team period of Arizona's training camp practice on Monday, Kansas State wide receiver and potential starter Tre Spivey III had one of the most eyebrow-raising catches over the last two-plus weeks.

Near the left sideline, Spivey elevated and high-pointed a pass — in Tetairoa McMillan-esque fashion — from quarterback Braedyn Locke over reserve cornerback Johno Price.

The catch generated a rowdy reaction from the UA offensive sideline.

Here are other notes and takeaways from Monday morning at Davis Sports Center and Dick Tomey Practice Fields:

* San Jose State transfer cornerback Michael Dansby is emerging as one of Arizona's top cornerbacks. After a so-so spring, Dansby is consistently causing pass deflections and interceptions and has won several one-on-one battles against Arizona's top receivers.

* Chattanooga transfer wide receiver Javin "Nunu" Whatley caught a pass over the middle from quarterback Noah Fifita for a 65-yard touchdown in a 7-on-7 period. Whatley also had a nifty grab, as he was falling down at the 2-yard line with safety Dalton Johnson in smothering coverage, in a one-on-one period.

* Texas State transfer linebacker Max Harris and defensive end Tre Smith each had a sack in a team period. Johnson had a pass deflection covering tight end Tyler Powell.

* Offensive lineman Chubba Ma'ae returned to practice after missing last week due to his father passing away. Ma'ae worked with Arizona's second offensive line unit, along with Zarius Wells, Ise Matautia, Portland State transfer Isaac Perez and freshman tackle Louis Akpa. Arizona's first offensive line included Ty Buchanan, Michael Wooten, Ka'ena Decambra, Alexander Doost and Tristan Bounds.

* College of San Mateo defensive tackle transfer Ezra Funa is officially with the team, but will likely redshirt this season. Garden City Community College transfer Zac Siulepa, a 6-7, 365-pound defensive tackle from New Zealand, is expected to join the team before the season.

* A scout from the Kansas City Chiefs attended practice on Monday.
