Six practices later, Arizona completed its first week of training camp on Tuesday.Â
The Wildcats wore full pads for the first time in training camp and had multiple live-action team periods, which mostly featured a blend of second- and third-string players looking to make a strong impression and potentially fight for a spot.Â
Here are notes and takeaways from Arizona's first fully-padded practice at Dick Tomey Practice Fields and Davis Sports Center.Â
* Redshirt sophomore Leviticus Su'a had a sack during the first team period. The former Mater Dei star, who's been mostly injured his first two seasons at Arizona, is having a strong training camp and appears to be a rock-solid and reliable backup linebacker.Â
* Texas transfer cornerback Jay'Vion Cole had a strong practice on Tuesday. Cole had a tackle for loss and an interception, which was tipped by defensive back Devin Dunn. Cole also had a pass deflection covering wide receiver Brandon Phelps. Ayden Garnes and Michael Dansby have been Arizona's top cornerbacks. Garnes, Dansby, Cole and Marquis Groves-Killebrew is an experienced two-deep at cornerback.Â
* Arizona's starting defense on Tuesday was Tre Smith, Tiaoalii Savea and Cerritos College transfer Leroy Palu, with linebackers Chase Kennedy, Max Harris and Taye Brown. Arizona's starting secondary was Garnes, Dansby, nickel back Gavin Hunter and safeties Dalton Johnson and Genesis Smith. Â
* Dansby jumped a pass covering Kris Hutson intercepted quarterback Noah Fifita and returned it for a touchdown.Â
* Arizona has multiple promising freshman defensive backs, including safety Coleman Patmon and cornerbacks Gianni Edwards and Swayde Griffin. Despite not having as many weight-room reps as the veteran defensive backs, the young defensive backs have been scrappy and fearless in team periods and seven-on-seven segments.Â
* Freshman running back Wesley Yarbrough broke a tackle and shed multiple defenders for a first down. The 5-10, 211-pound Yarbrough could play in four games â potentially five, if the Wildcats make a bowl game â and preserve a year of eligibility, but he looks game-ready and a likely option as Arizona's fourth running back behind Ismail Mahdi, Kedrick Reescano and Quincy Craig.
* Alcorn State transfer defensive end Malachi Bailey recorded a sack. Brown also sacked Fifita.Â
* Arizona's placekicking competition was on display. Walk-on Tyler Prasuhn got the first reps and made field goals from 32 yards, 37 and 42, but missed a 47-yard attempt, albeit there could've been a poor snap or hold. Sophomore Michael Salgado-Medina also missed one of his four attempts, but had makes from 32 yards, 42 and 52; he missed a 47-yard field goal.
* Walk-on linebacker Dominic Hanger had an impressive practice with a pass deflection and a tackle for loss.
* Phelps caught a perfectly-thrown deep pass over his shoulder from backup quarterback Braedyn Locke at the sideline. Â
* Scouts from the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans were in attendance.Â
