Mijac is Long Realty’s new designated broker
John Mijac is the new designated broker for Long Realty Co. He succeeds Jerome King, Long Realty’s designated broker since 2003, who has retired.
Mijac joined Long in 2012 as a contract manager at the Tanque Verde office and a sales manager at the Foothills office, after many years in small Tucson brokerages.
Nationally, Mijac helped spearhead a successful change in the Realtor code of ethics to include protections for gay, lesbian and transgender people, Long Realty said in a news release. He worked at the state level to revise the Arizona purchase contract, and on Arizona Association of Realtor committees on issues including regionalization and transaction management.
Locally, Mijac has served on the Tucson Association of Realtors board and its MLS board, and led the task force to rewrite the MLS bylaws and governance structure.

Cox Business adds Silver as its director of sales
Larry Silver is the new director of sales for Cox Business in Southern Arizona.
Before joining Cox, Silver held leadership positions with Cablevision and Comcast, and helped start Comcast’s business-services department for the Mountain region. Under his leadership, the department grew to become a $45 million per year organization, Cox said in a news release.
He has been a big brother in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization, a project leader for United Way and a board member of the Children of Ethiopia Education Foundation.

as escrow officer, branch manager
Fidelity National Title Agency hired Chrissy Orr to serve as an escrow officer and as a branch manager for a new office to be opened in early 2016.
Orr brings experience in the escrow and title insurance industry coupled with customer service skills, Fidelity said in a news release.

hires Trush as sales manager
Wendy Trush is the new sales manager for Long Realty’s Foothills office, at 4501 E. Sunrise Drive, Suite 101.
Trush, an associate broker, had been the office manager and contract administrator with another local real estate company.
Trush received the 2013 Tucson Association of Realtors’ Realtor of the Year award. She is on TAR’s board of directors and is chair of its risk committee.

UA grad Noli named sales director
of Janos’ Carriage House venue
Megan Noli was hired as sales director for the Carriage House Event Space & Cooking School, chef Janos Wilder’s new venue downtown next to Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails.
Noli is a University of Arizona graduate with a bachelor of science degree in retail and consumer studies and an MBA with an emphasis on global management. She brings extensive experience in domestic and international sales, and volunteers as vice president of PTA community relations at her son’s school.

Amoroso is Lovell Foundation executive director
John Amoroso is the new executive director of the David and Lura Lovell Foundation, which was founded in 1994 and is based in Tucson.
The family foundation supports nonprofit projects related to mental health, integrative medicine, cultural and spiritual enrichment and other family-initiated grants. In 2015 the foundation awarded more than $2 million to 15 nonprofits in Tucson, six in Toledo, Ohio, and several national projects.
Over the past 15 years, Amoroso has managed multimillion-dollar grant portfolios from the design to the reporting phase.
He has served as program officer for The Ford Family Foundation, Oregon’s largest private foundation, funding more than $30 million in grants and scholarships annually. He managed more than 180 responsive grants for rural youths in the areas of access to health and dental care, abuse prevention and positive development, Lovell Foundation said in a news release.
Most recently he managed a region for the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board’s bi-annual responsive grant cycle for natural resource restoration and a statewide technical assistance grant for community collaboration on forestry issues.
Amoroso has a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Regis University in Denver and received his bachelor’s degree in English from Carroll College in Helena, Montana.

Carondelet names Biggs as chief nursing officer
Carondelet St. Mary’s has promoted Jennifer Biggs to chief nursing officer.
Biggs, an R.N. who joined the St. Mary’s staff 17 years ago, will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the hospital’s nursing department and its daily operations.
Most recently, as senior director of nursing, Biggs was instrumental in establishing the Bridges Geropsychiatric Program, Carondelet said in a news release.
She was selected as the Tucson Nurses Week Foundation’s Most Inspirational Mentor for 2014 based on ethical integrity and vision, Carondelet said. She has served on that foundation’s board since 2010 and as its secretary since 2011.

Schmaltz joins TAA as associate general counsel
Chris Schmaltz has joined the Tucson Airport Authority as associate general counsel.
Before joining TAA, Schmaltz was a member/partner at Gust Rosenfeld PLC, where he was a part of the public law group. During his tenure there he gained extensive airport experience while representing the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. Before that, he was an associate at Gammage & Burnham in Phoenix.
Schmaltz earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona with a degree in Russian and Soviet studies. He received his JD degree from the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.

Gregory S. Robinson joined Genesis OB/GYN as chief executive officer.
Robinson, who has overWith over 20 years’ experience in medical practice finance and administration, was chief administrator for a 38-provider OB/GYN practice in the Kansas City metropolitan area before joining Genesis, a 46-provider group.

Betsy DeVenney received her bachelor’s degree in child development from Iowa State University and completed her internship at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She is the child life specialist for the hematology-oncology unit and the BMT outpatient clinic.

She is dually certified as a child life specialist and therapeutic recreation specialist.

Snyder takes on new Banner-University job
Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson has named Kara Snyder as director of nursing for pediatrics.
A registered nurse for nearly 20 years, she has been at the hospital for 11 years as a clinical nurse specialist for trauma/critical care and as director of quality, infection prevention, survey readiness and data analytics for both Banner-UMC and its sister hospital, Banner-University Medical Center South. Most recently she was interim director of women’s and children’s services.
Snyder earned her bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Arizona, her master’s in trauma, critical care and emergency nursing from the University of Maryland, and is studying for her Ph.D. in nursing and health-care systems at the University of Colorado Denver.

Sherman named to top post at Sun Corridor Network
The Sun Corridor Network named Michael C. Sherman as executive director. Among other roles, he will work with public and private sector stakeholders to expand gigabit speed connectivity to K-12 public schools, community colleges, libraries and museums in Arizona.
The research and education network is a collaborative effort sponsored by Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.
Sherman most recently was executive manager of the Arizona Department of Administration’s broadband planning and public safety communications department. He spent 27 years at the Salt River Project, including time as director of SRP telecom; and was an account supervisor at McCann-Erickson.
He holds a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Oregon and a master’s of business administration from Arizona State University.

González-Garciá to practice endocrinology at Diamond
The University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics and Diamond Children’s Medical Center welcomes Dr. Zoe González-Garciá as an assistant professor in endocrinology.
As a pediatric endocrinologist, González-Garciá will provide care for children with endocrine disorders such as Type 1 diabetes, thyroid problems, hypoglycemia and obesity, among others. She will care for children with endocrine disorders at the Angel Wing for Children with Diabetes and at Diamond Children’s.
She received her medical degree from Richmond University Medical Center in New York, completed her residency in pediatrics in Puerto Rico and completed a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson has named Carla Rodriguez a neonatal nurse practitioner in the nursery ICU at Diamond Children’s, as director of nursing of women and infant services.
Rodriguez has held several nurse and management roles at Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson over the years. She earned her bachelor of nursing degree through Grand Canyon University and a master’s in nursing from Rush University.

Casino Del Sol Resort has named Amanda Sampson Lomayesva general counsel. She previously served two years as the chief judge for the Hopi Tribe, and was attorney general for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
Lomayesva has successfully argued at the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and is admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court.
She was the State Bar appointee to the board of DNA Legal Services, where she served as board president. She is a member of the State Bar’s Indian Law Section Executive Committee and was recently selected as a Flinn-Brown Fellow in the 2015 cohort for the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership.
Lomayesva received a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of California Berkeley and a juris doctorate and M.A. in American Indian studies, both from UCLA.

Johnson to lead El Rio Community Health Center
El Rio Community Health Center has selected Nancy J. Johnson as executive director after a national search. She has served as the non-profit agency’s chief operating officer since 2009 and as interim CEO since July.
She will succeed Kathy Byrne, who retired in July.
Johnson holds a PhD in health sciences/administration from Walden University and master’s degrees in nursing (University of Illinois) and marketing (University of Arizona Eller School).

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has named Mary Louise Luna as director of gift planning.
Her career has focused on fund development, with primary responsibility for legacy gifts. She previously served as planned giving officer for the Carondelet Foundation.
Luna is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Planned Giving Roundtable of Southern Arizona. She is co-founder of the Caregiver Consortium in Tucson and has served as chair for AFP’s National Philanthropy Day. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from Catholic University of America.

Barker Morrissey Contracting announced that co-owner and former vice president Brian Barker has become its president.
Co-owner and former president Kevin Morrissey will leave the company at the end of the year.

Asthma research unit to be led by Martinez
Dr. Fernando D. Martinez, a UA regents professor and Swift–McNear endowed chair of pediatrics, was named inaugural director of the new Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center at the University of Arizona.
In taking on the role, Martinez steps down as director of the UA Bio5 Institute, a position he held since 2009.
He is a member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Advisory Council and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. He has been on the Pulmonary and Allergy Drug Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program’s Expert Panel.
Martinez received his medical degrees from the University of Chile in Santiago and the University of Rome, specializing in pediatric pulmonology. He has been at the UA since 1987.

Lindner received her medical degree from Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.
She completed her residency in pediatrics at Cohen Children’s Medical Center of The Long Island Jewish Hospital, and then completed a fellowship in pediatric nephrology at The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
She is board certified in pediatrics.

County attorney's service for victims is run by Penny
Laura Penny is the new director of the Victim Services Division of the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
“As a homicide survivor, Laura has a personal connection to this work,” the office said in a news release. “Her brother was murdered in a hate crime in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1996. Laura is passionate about supporting victims throughout the criminal justice system process.”
Most recently, Penny was interim executive director of DIRECT Center for Independence. For 10 years, she was CEO of the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona, where, during her tenure, grant allocations to nonprofit organizations increased from $66,000 to $305,000 annually.
Previously, Penny served in executive level positions at CODAC Behavioral Health Services and the Arizona Department of Education. She began her career as a Pima County adult probation officer and pre-sentence investigator.
She has received numerous honors, including the YWCA Woman on the Move award in 2001 and the Inside Tucson Business Woman of Influence award in 2006. Her county salary is $90,000.

Once a Sundt laborer, Hoover's now president
On Thursday, Sundt Construction announced the appointment of longtime employee Mike Hoover as president.
Hoover, previously Sundt’s executive vice president and chief operating officer for the general contractor’s Civil Group, replaces former Sundt President and CEO David S. Crawford, who retains his chief executive title.
Tom Case, who joined Sundt in March as senior vice president of the Civil Group, will become chief operating officer for that group.
Hoover “joined Sundt as a laborer directly from high school in 1978, while studying mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona in Tucson,” Sundt said in a news release.
“After college, Hoover worked in the field as an engineer and carpenter before returning to Sundt a few years later. Since then, he has held a variety of positions within the company including project engineer, project superintendent, project manager, senior project manager and division manager.”
Hoover will also oversee Sundt’s National Projects Group as well as its Southwest District and safety/quality operations. He is a former chairman of the Highway and Transportation Division of the Associated General Contractors of America.

Providence Service Corp. announced last week that it has named David Shackelton as chief financial officer, a post he has held in an interim role since August.
Shackelton, 30, joined Providence in February 2014 as head of corporate development.

Cancer Center turns over clinical trials to Persky
Dr. Daniel Persky was named associate director of clinical investigations and director of the clinical trials office at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.
A physician-scientist, Persky is an associate professor of medicine at the UA College of Medicine in Tucson. He specializes in hematology/oncology, particularly lymphoid malignancies. Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he is a research member of the Therapeutic Development Program at the UA Cancer Center.
He joined the Cancer Center in 2006 and is a co-leader of its lymphoma team.
Persky serves on the Hodgkin Lymphoma subcommittee of the National Cancer Trials Network. In 2010, he received the SWOG/Hope Foundation Coltman Fellowship.

Cancer prevention researcher Menon joins UA College of Nursing
Usha Menon, Ph.D., R.N., an expert in health behavior change to reduce health disparities in cancer prevention, has joined the University of Arizona College of Nursing as associate dean for research and global advances.
Menon has garnered $20 million to support her research program, consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health and national foundations, the UA said in a news release.
She joins the UA from Ohio State University, where she served as vice dean, Centennial Professor of Nursing, and director of the Ph.D. and M.S. nursing sciences programs. Before that, she held positions at Arizona State University.
Menon serves on the NIH Health Disparities and Equity Promotion Study Section. She received the inaugural Investigator with a Brilliant Future Award from the American Academy of Nursing/Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.

Davis promoted to director
of Pima County corrections
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department promoted India Davis from assistant corrections director to corrections chief on Sept. 8. Davis is the first in her position to rise through the ranks, beginning as a corrections officer, the department said in a news release.
Before joining the Sheriff’s Department in 1996, Davis was a Russian-language expert in the U.S. Army and a corrections officer for the states of North Carolina and Arizona. She has served in diverse assignments in the Pima County department and became assistant corrections director in 2014.
Davis serves as a board member for the Arizona Detention Association, the Pima County Reentry Coalition, and the Pima County Justice Coordinating Council; and as a liaison to other criminal justice agencies, the courts, and adult probation. In 2015, she won the Pima County Women’s Commission Leadership Award and she was the recipient of the 2015 Administrator of the Year award by the Arizona Detention Association.
She received a bachelor’s in accounting from the University of Arizona; a master’s in public administration from Northern Arizona University; and completed the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations training course and the UA leadership for public sector professionals course.
Davis’ county salary is $134,999.

Sleep researcher Grandner joins UA College of Medicine
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson welcomes Michael Grandner as assistant professor of psychiatry and director of its new Sleep and Health Research Program.
Grandner is a sleep researcher who studies how sleep and sleep-related behaviors are related to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, neurocognitive functioning, mental health and longevity. He is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences for two research studies.
Grandner earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical and social sciences in psychology from the University of Rochester, and a doctorate from the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego. He completed a Behavioral Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and is board-certified in behavioral sleep medicine. He was a research associate in medicine and then instructor in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed a master’s degree in translational research.
Grandner has published more than 75 articles and chapters on issues relating to sleep and health.

Wells Fargo announced that District Manager Alfredo Luna has assumed responsibility for the Greater Tucson Metro, replacing Anthony Snider, who relocated to Alaska. Luna is responsible for 225 team members and 14 banking locations.
Luna joined Wells Fargo in 2003 as a teller and has since served as a personal banker, assistant manager, store manager and as a district manager.

Lacy to lead UA's Global Mining Law Center
John Lacy, a shareholder in DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy, has been appointed to head the University of Arizona’s new Global Mining Law Center.
The center, housed at the UA’s James E. Rogers College of Law, will provide specialty courses, including human- rights laws, indigenous- peoples law and policy, and environmental law. Degree and non-degree educational opportunities will be available, both online and on-campus.
Lacy has been with DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy since 1977, focusing his practice on mining and public land law. He has taught courses on mining and public land law, oil and gas law, and mining transactions at the Rogers College of Law and in the UA Department of Mining and Geological Engineering as an adjunct professor since 1976. He authored numerous publications about mineral rights and mineral law history.
He received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the UA in 1964 and graduated from the UA College of Law in 1967. Lacy is a past president of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation and the Arizona Historical Society. He served in the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps in Vietnam during 1969-70.

Brett Goble appointed principal of City High
Brett Goble is principal of City High School, beginning with the ’15 fall semester.
Goble, a co-founder of City High School in 2004, previously served as the business manager and outreach center director. During his 11 years at City High, Goble taught 10th grade history and English, served as a lead teacher, and steered the school’s professional development outreach efforts.
He earned a post-baccalaureate certification in secondary education from the University of Arizona. He graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S. in economics and a minor in history. In 2011, he achieved certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Goble is a national facilitator for the School Reform Initiative and served on the Advisory Board of the Southern Arizona Writing Project.

Diamond Children’s center adds faculty member
Dr. Jenny Mendelson and Dr. Alicia Palmer have joined the University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics and Banner Children’s-Diamond Children’s Medical Center as faculty.
Mendelson, an assistant professor, joined the Division of Critical Care. As a pediatric intensivist and pediatric emergency physician, she will take care of critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the pediatric emergency department at Diamond Children’s.
She completed her medical degree and a combined residency in emergency medicine/pediatrics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. She then completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Her research interests are in the areas of pediatric cardiac arrest and post-resuscitation care, medical simulation and transport medicine. She is board certified in pediatrics and emergency medicine.

Congregation Anshei Israel has appointed Rabbi Ruven Barkan as education and youth director. He will head up the congregation's Religious School and United Synagogue Youth programs.
Barkan was born and raised in Tucson. His background includes study in Israel, working as a summer counselor at Camp Ramah in California and undergraduate work at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles.
He was ordained in 2001 at Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, and served as rabbi in residence at the Chicagoland Jewish High School for 11 years. For the past three years, he was rabbi for Congregation Agudath Achim in Savannah, Georgia.

Drs. Hypes, Smith are new at UA Emergency Medicine department
The University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine welcomes two new faculty members.
Dr. Cameron Hypes, assistant professor of emergency medicine, sees patients in the emergency department and also spends time in the ICU as an attending physician.
His research interests include airway management, including the use of mechanical ventilation devices, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest outcomes and treatment for shock. Hypes received his medical degree and master’s degree in public health from Ohio State University in Columbus. He recently completed a critical-care fellowship at the UA.

Tucson Electric Power and UniSource Energy Services named a leader to oversee transmission and distribution (T&D) system operations and engineering.
Susan Gray was promoted to vice president of T&D operations and engineering. “She will oversee the delivery of safe, reliable service to TEP customers,” the companies said in a news release.

Shirley Molina of the Schuchulig Village on the Tohono O’odham Nation was elected president of the Southern Arizona Legal Aid Inc. board of directors.
Molina is the first Tohono O’odham, as well as the first non-attorney, to chair the 24-member board. She has been a board member for 12 years.
SALA, established in 1951, is a private, nonprofit firm that provides free civil legal aid to low-income individuals and families in Pima, Pinal, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Gila, Navajo and Apache counties, as well as to 11 of Arizona’s 22 Native American tribes.

Combs, assistant professor, joined the division of pulmonology, allergy and immunology. He specializes in pediatric sleep medicine and works with children with a variety of sleep disorders. Additionally, he interprets pediatric sleep studies and is working with the Banner – University Medical Center Tucson Center for Sleep Disorders to establish a pediatric sleep laboratory on campus.
He completed his M.D., pediatrics residency and a fellowship in pediatric sleep medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson.

Senguttuvan, assistant professor, joined the division of Endocrinology. As a pediatric endocrinologist, he will take care of children with type 1 diabetes and other endocrine disorders at Diamond Children’s and Banner – University Medical Center Angel Wing for Children with Diabetes.
He currently is participating in type 1 diabetes research, including the NIH-funded TrialNet study.
Senguttuvan earned his medical degree from Vinayaka Missions Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospital (Salem, India), and completed his pediatrics residency at Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center (affiliated to the Weill Cornell University). He then joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine to complete a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology.

Research professor joins UA department
Tomas Nuño has joined the University of Arizona department of emergency medicine as research assistant professor.
Nuño will provide research support for department faculty members, serve as associate director of ScholarQuest, and establish a research program “centered on the reduction of cardiovascular health disparities in emergency medicine populations, including racial and ethnic minorities and rural populations,” UA said in a news release.
He received a master’s degree in economics at the UA and a doctorate in epidemiology from the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
In 2012, Nuño won a three-year grant from the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. He has received numerous national awards.

Yin Chen moves from assistant professor to associate professor in the department of pharmacology and toxicology.
Chen is a member of the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center and of the BIO5 Institute at the university. His current research involves chronic airway diseases such as asthma.
In March, he was named the 2014-2015 Young Investigator for the inhalation and respiratory specialty section of the Society of Toxicology.

Lizarde returning to KVOA to serve as a weekend anchor
Angelique Lizarde will return to KVOA-TV/News 4, Tucson’s NBC affiliate, as a weekend news anchor. Her first day on-air will be Aug. 3.
Lizarde previously was a multi-media journalist at KVOA from October 2009 until January 2012. Since leaving Arizona she has worked in San Diego, at KFMB-TV (CBS) and most recently at XETV-TV (CW) as a news reporter.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Diego and a master of science in broadcast journalism from Boston University.

Riall is named chief of division of general surgery at UA
The University of Arizona Surgery Department has recruited Dr. Taylor S. Riall, a surgical oncologist, to be chief of the Division of General Surgery/Surgical Oncology.
She is internationally known for her research into comparative effectiveness “to understand the right treatment, for the right patient, in the right setting” and in patient-centered cancer and general surgery outcomes, UA said in a news release. She will join the department Oct. 1.
Riall, who specializes in complex disorders of the pancreas and bile ducts, is coming to the UA from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where she is the John Sealy Distinguished Chair in Clinical Research and the director of the Center for Comparative Effectiveness and Outcomes. Her medical degree is from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

County taps Casey for Community Services, Employment, Training
Pima County has promoted Charles Casey to director of its Community Services, Employment and Training Department.
He replaces Arthur Eckstrom, who retired July 3 after 32 years with the county.
Casey has been administrative manager for the department. He joined Pima County in 1985 as community services eligibility coordinator and information systems manager. He was the Community Services Department’s first grants writer. Later he wrote grants for and managed the county’s Regional Re-employment Center, which served dislocated workers.
Currently, Casey coordinates $22 million in workforce and training funds for local employers, dislocated workers, youths and disadvantaged adults and community programs.
He also supervises planning and serves as a liaison with numerous local, state and federal agencies. His salary is $109,000.

Henschen is named Star's interim publisher
Mark Henschen was named interim publisher of the Arizona Daily Star. He also retains his title as vice president of circulation and operations, a position he has held since joining the Star in 2011.
The National Circulation Director Hall of Fame announced last week that Henschen is one of three inductees for 2015. He has worked in circulation since he was a college student and has received several previous industry awards, including the Newspaper Association of America’s circulation sales executive of the year in 2004.

Arizona Broadcasters Hall to enshrine Buckmaster
Bill Buckmaster will be inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame at a luncheon Oct. 15 in Scottsdale.
Buckmaster is a five-time Emmy Award nominee whose career in communications included anchor positions at KICU-TV in San Jose-San Francisco; and at KUAT-TV in Tucson, where he hosted the public affairs program “Arizona Illustrated” for 23 years.
A former broadcast editor for The Associated Press, Buckmaster has also served as news director at several radio stations. In 2010 he formed Bill Buckmaster Communications LLC, which produces “Buckmaster,” a daily news talk program on Tucson’s KVOI AM-1030. He has received numerous awards.

The town of Sahuarita promoted Mohammad El-Ali to assistant town engineer.
El-Ali was hired by Sahuarita in December as a civil engineer, after working as a capital improvements engineer for the city of Flagstaff; and as a transportation division administrator and city engineer during his 26 years working for the city of Tucson.
His civil engineering bachelor’s and master’s degrees are from the University of Arizona.

The appointment of entomologist Bruce Tabashnik and history professor Julia Clancy-Smith as regents’ professors, approved recently by the Arizona Board of Regents, brings to 99 the UA’s number of regents’ professors since the designation was created in 1987. The honor is reserved for faculty scholars who have achieved national and international distinction for their work.
In addition, Vicente Talanquer was named a university distinguished professor for his contributions to educational excellence and undergraduate education. Henrietta “Etta” Kralovec and Frans Tax were named university distinguished outreach faculty for their sustained commitment to community and academic outreach.
Tabashnik, professor and head of entomology in the UA’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has served as head of the department of entomology since 1996 and is a member of the Bio5 Institute. He previously was a faculty member at the University of Hawaii and earned his doctorate at Stanford University.
He has served as an editorial-board member for six scientific journals and provided more than 700 reviews of grant proposals and manuscripts for eight granting agencies and 82 journals. His funded extramural research grants total more than $9 million, and he has co-authored a patent licensed to a major corporation. The Entomological Society of America honored him with the Excellence in Integrated Pest Management Award in 1992.
Historian Clancy-Smith teaches about modern and early modern Africa and the Middle East. She has received numerous fellowships and awards, including the National Humanities Center’s Research Fellowship in North Carolina; a fellowship with the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University’s School of Social Science; and a research fellowship with the Woodrow Wilson Research Center in Washington, D.C.
Clancy-Smith has authored and co-authored several award-winning books, including “The Modern Middle East and North Africa: A History in Documents,” “Mediterraneans: North Africa and Europe in an Age of Migration, c. 1800-1900” and “Rebel and Saint: Muslim Notables, Populist Protest, Colonial Encounters (Algeria and Tunisia, 1800-1904).”

County Attorney's Office promotes lawman St. John
Keith St. John was named chief of detectives in the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
He has 38 years of law enforcement experience, beginning in 1977 with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, where he became a homicide detective.
St. John joined the Pima County Attorney’s Office in 2001. One of the cases he handled for many years, at both offices, was the cold-case investigation into the 1996 car-bombing death of businessman Gary Triano. In a news release last week announcing St. John’s promotion, the County Attorney’s Office said he was integral to developing evidence that ultimately led to Pamela Phillips being convicted in 2014 of hiring a hit man to kill her ex-husband.
Over the past 14 years, St. John has served as detective, lead detective and acting chief of detectives for the County Attorney’s Office.

Jeff Guthrie appointed county's emergency management director
Jeff Guthrie has been named director of Pima County’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
As director, he also oversees the voter-approved $15 million Emergency Operations Center at 3434 E. 22nd St. His salary is $100,000.
Guthrie had served as the deputy director since 2010 and has worked for the office since 2006. He replaces Mike Hein, who resigned as director in March.
Guthrie is a certified emergency manager and a master exercise practitioner (a program of FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute). He has a bachelor’s degree in emergency management. Before coming to Pima County, he spent 27 years as a firefighter and still is a certified firefighter and has an associate’s degree in fire science.
He is a member of the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs Advanced Team; a state instructor authorized to conduct several classes including incident command system and emergency operations center management; and is the chair of the Regional Emergency Preparedness Committee, which he started in 2009.
Ellerson named CFO of Crest Insurance
Crest Insurance Group, LLC of Tucson has named Mike Ellerson as chief financial officer, to support what the company calls its aggressive growth plans.
Prior to joining Crest this month, Ellerson spent 30 years with Tucson’s Golden Eagle Distributors, serving as vice president and CFO since 2002, and previously holding leadership positions there in accounting, information systems and human resources.
He received both an undergraduate and graduate degree from the University of Arizona: a bachelor of science in management information systems and an MBA.

Pediatric hospitalist joins UA department
Dr. Geetha Gopalakrishnan, assistant professor, has joined the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics and Banner–Diamond Children’s Medical Center.
Gopalakrishnan received her medical degree from Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Hospitals. She completed her residency in pediatrics from Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.
As a pediatric hospitalist, she will provide care for hospitalized children at Diamond Children’s. She will also participate in training pediatric residents completing their hospitalist rotations and medical students who are completing their pediatrics clerkships.

Hempel promoted to properties director for Airport Authority
Barbara Hempel has been promoted by the Tucson Airport Authority to director of properties, succeeding Karen Thomas, who retired.
Hempel is responsible for directing property leasing and management activities to airlines, concessions as well as general aviation, commercial and industrial tenants. Her department’s responsibilities also include overseeing ground transportation, airport-owned parking lots and the TAA’s property and liability insurance.
Hempel has been TAA’s property administrator since December 2010. Previously, she managed medical properties for a real estate investment trust from 1996 to 2010.
She has been 4-H leader and was a member of its Horse Advisory Board. She is committee chair for the Tucson Chapter of Chick N Chaps, a fundraising event for local cancer research.

Dr. Adrian Valle has joined Oro Valley Hospital’s as medical director for the senior behavioral health inpatient unit, which treats patients 55 and older who voluntarily decide they need help with issues related to aging.

Anivax's Anderson to lead commercialization efforts
Michael Anderson will lead all product commercialization efforts at Anivax, a Tucson veterinary biologics startup.
Initially, he will manage the USDA approval for the company’s patented Campylobacter food safety vaccine. The product is designed to be administered to poultry, to reduce colonization of the bacteria and ultimately reduce the incidence of campylobacteriosis, a common bacterial foodborne illness in humans.
Anderson has more than 25 years of industry experience in the vaccine field and is responsible for launching numerous USDA vaccine licensures.
He earned his bachelor’s of science in biology from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in pathobiology from the University of Arizona.

Corporate affairs division at Hudbay grows by three
The Arizona Business Unit of Hudbay Minerals Inc. named Britann O’Brien as director of its new corporate affairs division, responsible for community relations, government affairs, communications and human resources.
O’Brien, a longtime expert in government affairs, was most recently the director of the Southern Arizona Office for former Gov. Jan Brewer.
Before that, O’Brien served as homeland security specialist for then-U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl from 2000-2011.
She is an alumna of the University of Arizona and a Flinn-Brown Leadership Fellow.
Also joining the corporate affairs division are Jerry Bustamante as manager of community relations and Bonnie Medler as government relations officer.
Bustamante, also a UA alum, joins Hudbay from the Arizona Small Business Association, where he was senior vice president of public policy and Southern Arizona. Before that, he held positions with Canyon Community Bank and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.
Before joining Hudbay, Medler was deputy director of Brewer’s Southern Arizona Office. Sullivan, formerly of BMO, hired as an adviser at TCI
Mike Sullivan joined TCI Wealth Advisors Inc. as an adviser serving clients throughout Arizona.
Sullivan brings 35 years of experience providing wealth management for high net worth individuals, families, foundations and endowments, TCI said in a news release. He previously was managing director for Tucson and regional investment manager for the western United States for BMO Private Bank.

Joe Erceg was appointed Southern Arizona director of the Arizona Small Business Association, which has more than 10,000 members and is the state’s largest trade association.

Anivax’s initial vaccine for poultry was developed through collaborative research at the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Washington University, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health, international research collaborations and institutional support.
“I look forward to developing world-class vaccines in Tucson,” Buttery said in a news release.
Buttery is an executive in residence at the UA’s Tech Launch Arizona. He earned his B.S. in finance and MBA from the UA.
Pima Library Foundation will be led by Cunningham
The Pima Library Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) organization, hired Ann-Eve Cunningham as its first full-time executive director.
Cunningham, who brings more than 20 years of organization leadership and fundraising experience, most recently spent nearly 10 years with the University of Arizona as development director for the National Institute for Civil Discourse, Arizona Public Media, and the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.

Lisse to run clinical side of Telemedicine Program
Dr. Jeffrey R. Lisse, professor of medicine and medical director of the University of Arizona Arthritis Center’s Osteoporosis Program, was named medical director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program (ATP).
He will oversee its clinical operations, including recruiting physicians to provide telemedicine services over ATP’s statewide broad-band telecommunications network. He will preview cases to certify their suitability for management by telemedicine, conduct chart reviews, and oversee quality assurance programs.
Lisse, a specialist in rheumatology, has been with the UA Arthritis Center since 2000, when he joined the UA College of Medicine – Tucson as the Ethel McChesney Bilby Endowed Chair for Osteoporosis.
He was chief of the rheumatology section of the Department of Medicine from 2000 to 2013 and served as the UA Arthritis Center’s interim director from 2005 to 2008.

Carry comes to the Star from The State Journal-Register/Lincoln Courier in Springfield, Illinois, where he has been the newspaper’s vice president of advertising since 2012. His career has included advertising management positions at The Wichita Eagle, Detroit Media Partnership and The Oakland (MI) Press.

At UA, Silva to pursue biomed partnerships
After a national search, Rick Silva was named executive director of biomedical corporate alliances at the Arizona Health Sciences Center at the University of Arizona.
Silva is responsible for developing and managing UA-industry partnerships in biomedical research. He will work with Tech Launch Arizona as well as with the UA Foundation, the UA Alumni Association, public and private entities and other stakeholders.
He was with the University of Colorado Denver Technology Transfer Office for 14 years, serving as senior director since 2012.
Silva received his doctorate in physiology, with an emphasis in molecular endocrinology and molecular biology, from Colorado State University. He also holds a master’s of business administration from the University of Colorado Boulder and a bachelor of science in agriculture from New Mexico State University.
HealthSouth hospital picks Beifus as CEO
HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern Arizona named Donna Beifus as chief executive officer.
Previously she served as an associate vice president at the University of Arizona Medical Center and has held leadership roles in a variety of health-care settings for 20 years.
Beifus has been a registered nurse for more than 25 years.

AZ health chief Humble starts UA job April 13
The state’s longtime director of the Department of Health Services will soon join the University of Arizona.
Will Humble has been appointed division director for health policy and evaluation at the Center for Population Science and Discovery at Arizona Health Sciences Center.
Humble is a Tucson native who served as director of ADHS since 2009, an agency with about 2,000 employees and a budget of approximately $2 billion.
The Center for Population Science and Discovery aims to leverage the Arizona Health Sciences Center in health-care policy and other matters.
Humble begins his new job on April 13.
He has served as an adjunct faculty member for the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health for more than 10 years. He is active in a range of community organizations, serving as chair of the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council from 2011-2015 and as a board member for Scottsdale Training & Rehabilitation Services.
Humble received his master’s in public health from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991; his bachelor’s in microbiology from Arizona State University in 1985; and his bachelor’s in business administration from Northern Arizona University in 1982. In addition, he will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the UA at commencement ceremonies May 16 for his “dedication to the profession of public health and to its pursuit in Arizona.”

He previously was a partner in Nordensson Lynn Advertising and PR, and worked for the city of Tucson as assistant director of the Human and Community Development Department.
He served as chairman of the Independent Redistricting Commission from 2001 to 2011, is a former chair of the University of Arizona Health Network Board, and serves on the board of Banner Healthcare. He has been chairman of the Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board (First Things First), the UA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Advisory Board, the Downtown Tucson Partnership, and Southern Arizona Leadership Council board and was a founding board member of Science Foundation Arizona.

KXCI Community Radio names new GM
After a unanimous vote from the board of directors, Cathy Rivers was offered and has accepted the position of general manager for KXCI Community Radio.
Rivers transitions into the role from her current position as program director at KXCI. She has also been serving as interim general manager for the past few months.
She has more than 20 years of experience in radio, band management, and the broadcast and music industries. She previously managed the bands Cracker, The North Mississippi Allstars and Tony Furtado as well as her own music recording and touring career.

Mlawsky named COO at Tucson Medical Center
Tucson Medical Center named Karen Mlawsky senior vice president and chief operating officer.
Mlawsky previously was senior vice president and CEO of the Hospital Division of the University of Arizona Health Network, where she was responsible for leading two academic medical centers with more than 700 beds and 4,500 staff members.
Mlawsky came to Arizona after serving as executive director of Ohio State University Hospital East.
She joined University Medical Center in 2006 as vice president of UMC North and Oncology Services, where she led a strategic plan to expand services at the Arizona Cancer Center Clinic. After serving as vice president of clinical operations for UA Healthcare, she became CEO of the Hospital Division for the University of Arizona Health Network in May 2011.
Mlawsky, who assumes her duties the last week of April, replaces David Ressler, who left in February to become executive director of a multistate organization.

LCMS Laboratories Inc. hired Ernest Jimenez III as laboratory manager.
Jimenez, most recently a technical specialist in clinical pathology at the University of Arizona Medical Center, will be responsible for managing the operation of the new laboratory. He has more than 28 years of experience in the diagnostics industry.
Earlier this month, LCMS Laboratories announced the opening of a high-complexity laboratory near Innovation Park that operates under the guidelines of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments.
Jimenez earned his bachelor’s degree in microbiology-medical technology and a minor in chemistry from Northern Arizona University. He holds a certification in medical technology from the UA and is certified as a medical technologist from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Curry Hale has been promoted to human resources director for the city of Tucson. He had served in that role on an interim basis since March 2014.

Following a national search, biotech entrepreneur Peter N. Allison has been appointed senior director for technology innovation at the Arizona Health Sciences Center at the University of Arizona.
Allison will provide leadership in connecting AHSC research faculty and programs with commercial partners. Working with UA faculty researchers and business partners, he will inventory and position AHSC intellectual property for translation into commercial applications.
He is president and founder of IDM LabTrack Inc. and IDM AgriTrak Systems LLC in Scottsdale. He founded and serves as managing director of Biogenesis Investment Group LLC, and BGS Funds I and II, a health-care investment company providing funding to early-stage biotechnology, medical device and diagnostics companies. He served as the managing member of IDM Technologies LLC Fund I and formerly was a director of the BioAccelerator Fund I LLC.
He has more than 30 years of experience in business management, venture capital and debt and equity placement. He has also served on academic boards, including the University of Washington School of Public Health and School of Medicine in Seattle and the Gonzaga University Board of Regents. He serves on the boards of BioAccel and the Phoenix Symphony in Phoenix.
He received a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Washington and holds a Juris Doctor law degree from Seattle University.

Meredith Mullins has joined the University of Arizona Cancer Center as associate director of administration.
Mullins is responsible for oversight of the development, implementation and programmatic evaluation of the Cancer Center’s research efforts. She will also be responsible for the center’s administrative units, including fiscal management, human resources, grants and contracts management, public affairs, development and facility management.
Mullins most recently was vice president for administration at the Levine Cancer Institute of the Carolinas HealthCare System, headquartered in Charlotte. She has extensive administration experience at cancer centers, including the Nevada Cancer Institute; the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit; H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa; Oregon Health Sciences University Knight Cancer Institute and the Medical University of South Carolina. She is experienced in seeking, renewing and administering support grants.

Arnold named Realtors liaison to Rep. McSally
The National Association of Realtors has named William G. Arnold as federal political coordinator to U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Tucson. Arnold, a former president of the Tucson Association of Realtors, will work at a grassroots level with McSally and her staff on behalf of the real estate industry, advocating in a nonpartisan manner for policy initiatives that benefit Realtors and real estate owners in Southern Arizona, the association said in a news release.

Biologist Avila-Villegas now with Desert Museum
Sergio Avila-Villegas is joining the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum staff as a conservation specialist.
Avila-Villegas holds a master’s degree in arid lands management from University of Baja California and a bachelor’s of science in biology from University of Aguascalientes.
He has worked in northwest Mexico and the southwest United States on wildlife research and conservation since 1997. As part of his work, he lived with the Tarahumara Indians in the Copper Canyon of Chihuahua.
As a biologist in Mexico and the U.S., he studied pumas, cactus-ferruginous pygmy owls, California sea lions, Santa Catalina rattlesnakes, river otters, jaguars and ocelots. Avila-Villegas recently completed a decade at the Sky Island Alliance, initiating its work in northern Mexico.
At the Desert Museum, “he will continue cross-border conservation collaborations, building on his work on conserving habitat for big cats (bobcat, ocelot, mountain lion and jaguar) and control of invasive species (primarily buffelgrass),” the museum said in a news release. “He will also be involved in exhibit planning, research mentoring for teens and other citizen scientists and development of new public programs.”

Cairns is interim UA medical dean
Dr. Charles B. Cairns, who has served as vice dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson since September, has been promoted to interim dean of the college, effective Monday.
Dr. Joe G.N. “Skip” Garcia, UA senior vice president for health sciences, who has served as interim dean of the UA College of Medicine – Tucson since March 2014, returns full time as UA senior vice president for health sciences.
A national search for a permanent dean is expected to launch this fall.
Cairns, who will continue to report to Garcia, also serves as assistant vice president for clinical research and clinical trials at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is a nationally recognized leader in emergency and critical care research, UA officials said in a news release, and a professor in the UA Department of Emergency Medicine.

Mistler has more than 28 years of banking experience, mostly in Tucson. He joined a BBVA Compass legacy bank in 1999 and was named the Southern Arizona market president 15 years ago.
He serves on the University of Arizona’s Eller College National Board of Advisors and the boards of the Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, Southern Arizona Leadership Council and the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas and master’s degree from Arizona State University.

Emergency medicine faculty at UAMC picks up Bobrow
Dr. Bentley J. Bobrow joined the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson as distinguished professor.
He also will join Dr. Daniel Spaite as co-director of EMS research and associate director of the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center.
Bobrow serves as medical director for the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma System. He will continue to serve in this role as he joins the UA faculty.
The UA said in a news release that he is renowned for his work on improving outcomes for time-sensitive emergency medical conditions. He developed a a statewide reporting and educational network for responding to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest that has “resulted in a doubling in the rate of bystanders performing CPR and a quadrupling of survival with good neurologic outcome from sudden cardiac arrest in Arizona since 2004.”
Bobrow is the principal investigator for the HeartRescue Program in Arizona and is medical director of a Clinton Global Health Initiative to implement and measure telecommunicator-CPR across the United States and Asia. His numerous awards include the American Heart Association’s Best Resuscitation Science Award.
Bobrow, a graduate of the UA, received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and his emergency medicine residency training at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.

Wells Fargo's Gillmore named district manager
Wells Fargo named Stephanie Gillmore district manager for community banking in central Tucson. In her new role, Gillmore is responsible for 105 team members and eight banking stores.
Gillmore is a 10-year veteran with Wells Fargo, having joined the company in 2005 as a personal banker.
She also has served as a business specialist, Wells Fargo at Work manager and, most recently, store manager at the Golf Links Kolb banking store.

SinfoníaRx announced the following appointment: Sandra Leal, PharmD, vice president for innovation. She will oversee the development, implementation and sustainability of new medication therapy management models of care.
Leal previously was medical director of clinical pharmacy/Broadway clinic at El Rio Health Center. She developed the award-winning, nationally recognized pharmacy-based diabetes program at El Rio.
She graduated from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy and obtained her master of public health from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her numerous awards include being recognized as Pharmacist of the Year in Arizona.

Child-Parenting Centers names Lyons new CEO
After a national search, Erin Lyons was named CEO of Child-Parent Centers Inc., the Head Start and Early Head Start grantee for Southeastern Arizona.
Lyons has professional experience ranging from classroom teaching to management of adolescent residential facilities and organizational and community development activities, Child-Parent Centers said in a news release.
She most recently was senior regional director for First Things First, Arizona’s statewide early childhood initiative, where she worked with Regional Partnership Councils in Pima and Santa Cruz counties and with the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and Tohono O’odham Nation.
Lyons attended Yale University and then Northwestern University where she completed a bachelor of science in education. She earned her master of public administration at the University of Arizona Eller College.

UA medical college names Anesthesiology Dept. head
Dr. Wayne K. Jacobsen was appointed head of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson on Jan. 5, after serving as interim head since 2013.
Jacobsen, who also is UA professor of anesthesiology, previously served as director of the department’s residency program and prior to that was chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California.
He joined the UA anesthesiology team in 2004 as professor of clinical anesthesiology and associate head for education. In 2005, he also became director of the anesthesiology residency program. His research interests include ischemic reperfusion and medical education.

Sult joined the firm shortly after its establishment six years ago. He leads its export control and international trade practice group and advises clients regarding U.S. export regulations. He also practices in the areas of government and international contracting, employment and labor law, insurance coverage, commercial/business litigation, and related appellate litigation.
Sult graduated from Northern Arizona University and worked as a middle school teacher before attending law school at the University of Arizona.

Latifi returns as vice chair of international affairs at UA
The University of Arizona Department of Surgery welcomes back Dr. Rifat Latifi as professor of surgery and vice chair of international affairs.
While maintaining his academic research appointment at the UA, Latifi left the department in 2011 to direct the trauma program at Hamad General Hospital in Doha, Qatar.
He also is an honorary professor of the medical faculty of University of Tirana, Albania.
Latifi first came to the UA Department of Surgery and the UA Medical Center in 2003, serving as director of surgical critical care and associate director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program. In 2007, he served as interim chief of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care, Burn and Emergency Surgery.

Cassino hired by Strongpoint Marketing
Strongpoint Marketing announced a hiring: Kip Cassino, director of market research.
Cassino’s background includes national, regional and local research for Borrell Associates, in which he is an owner; as a corporate director of research for Knight Ridder Newspapers, as a senior researcher for Michelin Tire Company, and as director of research for the Wilmington (Delaware) News Journal. “He has been responsible for developing new market models in different industries accurate enough to be used as evidence in court, as well as key methodology for online interviews to replace dependency on telephone research,” Strongpoint said in a news release.
His bachelor’s of science degree in managerial economics is from Villanova University. Cassino also has done graduate work at the University of Maryland and the University of Arizona.
A past president of the Newspaper Association of America Research Federation, he received the Pioneer Award from the Direct Marketing Association and the Research Award of Merit from the Newspaper Association of America.

Esquivel hired by Strongpoint Marketing

Tucson Assoc. of Realtors name Lebowitz CEO
Marc Lebowitz, CEO of the Ada County Association of Realtors in Boise, Idaho, has been named chief executive of the Tucson Association of Realtors.
Lebowitz will bring 20 years of Realtor association management experience to TAR, including service on several committees and task forces at the national level.
At the National Association of Realtors, Lebowitz is 2016 Chair of the Association Executives Committee.
In May 2014, he was inducted into the National Association of Realtors Bud Smith Leadership Society.
Previously, he was with the Virginia Association of Realtors.
In Tucson, Lebowitz replaces Philip Tedesco, who resigned to become CEO of the Rhode Island Association of Realtors. Lebowitz’s start date is to be in mid-February.
Lebowitz graduated from the University of Maryland and began his career at CBS as an assistant director for news operations.
He earned his Certified Association Executive designation in 1998 and the Realtor Certified Executive designation in 2009.

Michael Puthoff has joined Assurance Health & Wellness, a Sinfonia HealthCare Corp. business, as president and chief executive officer.
He has held leadership roles in the behavioral health industry for more than 30 years and has led a number of organizations, Sinfonia officials said in a news release.
“Noted accomplishments throughout his career include: being one of the first to integrate behavioral health and primary care services, increasing asset base by 544 percent in three years, developing and opening group homes, programs and other patient facilities under limited timelines, and overseeing multimillion dollar expansions,” the news release said.

Susan Weber has joined Assurance HealthCare, a Sinfonia HealthCare Corp. business, as chief nursing officer.
Weber, a registered nurse, has more than 14 years’ experience in home health care, including positions as a field nurse case manager, an administrator and chief operations officer.
“As a health-care consultant and co-owner of a nationally recognized consulting organization, she has been instrumental in assisting providers nationwide in achieving and maintaining excellence in clinical practice, regulatory compliance and financial stability,” Sinfonia officials said in a news release. Lauver joins UA Cancer Center in finance
Stacy D. Lauver, CPA, has joined the University of Arizona Cancer Center as assistant director of finance.
Lauver is responsible for administrative oversight of the Cancer Center’s financial operations, including purchasing, hiring commitments, monitoring awards and expenditures from state, federal, sponsored, restricted, gift and UA Foundation funds. She also will assist principal investigators with grant preparation.
Lauver comes to UACC from Pima Community College, where she most recently was director of fiscal and management operations.
A graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in accounting and Grand Canyon University with a master’s in accounting, Lauver has also been a forensic accountant with the West River Group. She has served as a sponsored programs administrator at UA and a staff auditor with Heinfeld & Meech, PC. She also holds a chartered global management accountant certificate.

The YMCA of Southern Arizona has named Charles “Chip” Hutler as executive director of the Triangle Y Ranch Camp and Retreat Center.
Hutler has 27 years of camp experience, beginning with YMCA Family Camp Nawakwa in Wisconsin and most recently at Pine Lake/Lake Lucerne UM Camps, also in Wisconsin.
He holds a degree in political science/public administration, emphasizing wildlife biology.

Health Sciences Center hires fundraiser Flores
After a national search, Jennifer Flores was appointed associate vice president and chief health sciences development officer for the Arizona Health Sciences Center at the University of Arizona.
Flores, who joined the UA on Jan. 5, will provide senior strategic leadership and operations performance management of AHSC development activities.
She brings to the UA more than 15 years of principal and major gift fundraising experience at public research universities in the western United States. She served as senior director of principal gifts at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where she was part of the fundraising team for the Phil and Penny Knight Cancer Challenge $1 Billion Campaign, which in 11 months raised more than $400 million.
Flores also has served as a development professional at the University of Oregon, Colorado State University, the University of Montana Foundation and Northern Arizona University. Her experience includes fundraising for a variety of academic and allied health disciplines. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s in journalism.

Marketing vet Shannon named SynCardia VP
Tim Shannon joined SynCardia Systems Inc. as executive vice president, global commercialization.
Shannon held senior-level sales and marketing roles at several companies, including Boston Scientific Corp., General Electric Medical Systems, U.S. Surgical Corp. and Teleflex Inc., where he managed its $225 million vascular products portfolio, SynCardia said in a news release.

Stevens, board certified in OB/GYN, graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Pharmacy College hires drug expert Lo-Ciganic
Wei-Hsuan Jenny Lo-Ciganic joined the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science Jan. 5.
She is a pharmcoepidemiologist and biostatistician with interests in adherence to essential chronic medications, drug safety, cancer prevention, quality and value of prescribing, and diffusion of new drugs for chronic disease management.
At the UA, Lo-Ciganic will pursue her research, teach biostatistics-related courses and work to establish pharmacoepidemiology courses.
Lo-Ciganic completed her Ph.D. in epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh in 2013. She served as a postdoctoral associate for the Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing at the University of Pittsburgh Health Policy Institute.

Stem-cell-banking expert Harris to lead biorepository
David T. Harris, professor of immunology at the University of Arizona, was appointed executive director of the new Arizona Health Sciences Center Biorepository.
After a national search, Harris was selected to establish and lead the biorepository, “which will provide centralized, state-of-the-art specimen collection infrastructure and offer concierge-level technical and regulatory expertise to principal investigators engaged in research biospecimen activities,” UA officials said in a news release.
Harris, who holds a Ph.D., brings more than 20 years of experience in biobanking, including establishment of the first cord-blood stem-cell bank in the United States in 1992.
He also has extensive experience in adult stem-cell banking, as well as the banking of other cells and tissues.
He joined the UA faculty in 1989 after four years at the University of North Carolina.

Sklar elected to partnership of Lewis Roca Rothgerber
Jeffrey Sklar was elected to the partnership of Lewis Roca Rothgerber LLP.
Sklar has a wide-ranging litigation and appellate practice, including substantial experience in bankruptcy court. He regularly represents lenders in loan enforcement actions, businesses in commercial disputes and manufacturers in product liability cases, the firm said in a news release.
His recent experience includes serving as solo trial and appellate counsel in obtaining a nearly $2 million deficiency judgment against two guarantors after the trustee sale of several commercial parcels in Tucson. The Arizona Court of Appeals affirmed the judgment in a published opinion.
Sklar also recently drafted a successful petition for review to the Arizona Supreme Court that resulted in a reversal of the Court of Appeals on a key question related to municipal zoning actions.
Based in Tucson, he serves on the board of directors of Interfaith Community Services.
