Sheila Bowden, center, with bell, was nominated by Sandy Chan, second from left, for her work in preserving the pond at Fort Lowell Park. With Bowden and Chan are other volunteers.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is β€œbelled.”

Last week’s recipient: Sheila Bowden.

Nominated by: Sandy Chan.

Why: For dedicating her time to making the pond at Fort Lowell Park a protected environment for wildlife and for the domesticated ducks and turtles abandoned there. Bowden organizes work days at the pond to plant trees and shrubs, repair fencing and clean the area, Chan wrote in her nomination letter. When she’s not improving the pond, Bowden picks up trash around the park in the early morning hours, Chan wrote. β€œHer example has inspired many of the regular walkers at the park to pick up trash,” Chan wrote.
