Insurance man Marquez will lead 2016-17 United Way campaign
Edmund Marquez, owner of three Allstate Insurance agencies in Tucson, was named the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona 2016-2017 campaign chair.
“United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona is uniting a force against poverty and its annual campaign funds its work along with its more than 80 partner agencies. Eighty-nine cents of every dollar donated directly to United Way goes to fund programs,” the organization said in a news release.
Marquez, a University of Arizona graduate, serves on eight boards of directors, including the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District, Sun Corridor Inc. and Southern Arizona YMCA. He is on the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and the DM50. He was named businessman of the year in 2004 by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber and father of the year in 2016 by the Tucson Father’s Day Council.

Banner-UMC hires surgeon Barth
Pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Mary-Jane Barth joined the medical staff of Banner-University Medical Center Tucson and the faculty of the University of Arizona Department of Surgery.
She comes from Children’s Hospital of Saint Francis in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she held faculty positions for University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University pediatric residents.
Barth received her medical degree and completed her residency in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at University of Texas Southwestern. She was a pediatric cardiac surgeon for the Heart Institute for Children in Chicago. Her expertise is correcting congenital abnormalities of the heart.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of S. Arizona picks Jensen as CEO
Kate Maguire Jensen is the new president and CEO of the nonprofit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona, succeeding Diana Sheldon in the roles.
Jensen holds a University of Arizona master’s degree in public health and has worked in marketing, communications and health care administration. She was director of business development at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital since 2013; and previously served as UA vice president for marketing and community affairs director at Steele Children’s Research Center for the UA’s College of Medicine.

Artist and 'Daughters' author Celt will be at the library this summer
Author and comic artist Adrienne Celt is the newest writer-in-residence at the Pima County Public Library. Her term will run from June 1 to Sept. 1, 2016.
Celt’s novel “The Daughters” (W.W. Norton/Liveright 2015) won the PEN Southwest Book Award for Fiction and was named a Best Book of 2015 by NPR. She won a 2016 O. Henry Prize for “Temples,” published in Epoch. She writes and draws a comic at loveamongthelampreys.com
Celt will divide her hours: 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays at Joel D. Valdez Main Library and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays at Himmel Park Library. She will also present events during the summer; for information, see library.pima.gov

Phan promoted to associate professor in UA's Department of Pharmacy
Hanna Phan was promoted to associate professor from assistant professor in the University of Arizona Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science.
She is also a clinical pharmacy specialist in pediatric pulmonary medicine at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson and a preceptor for residents.
Phan was recognized by the Arizona Pharmacists Association with the Exemplary Patient Care Award in 2012, the Spirit of the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG) Award in 2012 and a Presidential Citation by PPAG in 2015. She is a previous chair of American College of Clinical Pharmacy Pediatric Practice and Research Network and a current director at large for PPAG.

Newsroom veteran Corella named Star interim editor
The Arizona Daily Star named Hipolito R. Corella interim editor.
In his new post, Corella will oversee newsroom operations during a national search to replace longtime editor Bobbie Jo Buel, who retired Friday, May 20.
Corella, 47, a native Tucsonan and University of Arizona graduate, has been at the Star since 1991. He has held several reporter and editor positions, including most recently, senior editor for daily news.

Star product for millennials to be guided by McKisson
The Arizona Daily Star promoted Irene McKisson to team leader of a new product for young Tucsonans.
McKisson’s previous position was social media and audience engagement editor.
She came to the Star’s sports department in 2003 where she was a designer, copy editor and night editor. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona’s School of Journalism.

Homicide Survivors names Helms executive director
Vanessa Helms joined Homicide Survivors Inc. as executive director.
Over the past 12 years, Helms worked at the Pima County Attorney’s Office in the Victim Services Division.
She has worked as a crisis advocate and coordinator of programs including a crisis volunteer program, a rural office expansion and the Victim Compensation Program for Pima County. Helms is a trainer for victim advocates statewide and nationally, for the Arizona Victim Assistance Academy and the National Office for Victim Assistance.
She has a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Arizona and a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Phoenix.

Heart researcher Gregorio adds vice dean to UA duties
Carol Gregorio was appointed vice dean for innovation and development at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson.
She will continue as head of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and as director of the Sarver Molecular Cardiovascular Research Program.
Gregorio, a leader in heart muscle research, joined the UA College of Medicine faculty in 1996.
She was appointed interim department head in 2008 and named permanent head in 2009. She has served as co-director of the UA Sarver Heart Center since 2007 and as the interim head of the Sarver Heart Center from 2013 to 2014.
She also is a member of the UA Bio5 Institute.

Mastriani is new president of Miramonte Companies
Julie Mastriani has been named president of Miramonte Companies and its affiliate companies, including Miramonte Holdings, an investment and holding company; Miramonte Arizona, a construction and development company; and Miramonte Homes, a sales and brokerage company.
Prior to her promotion to president, Mastriani served as chief operating officer of Miramonte for about 15 years. Her tenure also includes serving more than three years as chief operating officer of the Tucson division of Standard Pacific Homes, a publicly held company, during the acquisition of Miramonte Homes in 2004 through 2007.
Mastriani joined Miramonte in 1996, “and now joins the ranks of only a few women-led homebuilding and construction companies in Arizona,” the company said in a news release.

Star promotes Lolwing to new position
The Arizona Daily Star has promoted Mark Lolwing to director of circulation and consumer innovation.
Lolwing, whose previous title was audience development sales manager, came to the Star in 2007 from the Chicago Tribune, after working in marketing research at Millward Brown International. He received a bachelor’s in marketing from Northern Illinois University and an MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management.

Crest Insurance names Baena as development VP
Crest Insurance Group LLC has named Cristina Baena as vice president of business development.
Baena was originally hired in May 2014 as a producer in the employee benefits division of Crest. Before joining Crest, she was the marketing and funding coordinator for the Tucson Conquistadores and played golf professionally for several years.
She graduated from the University Of Arizona Eller College Of Management with a bachelor of science in marketing and general business. While at the UA, Baena was a member of the NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship Team in 2000.

Shaffer joined the Star in 2014 as senior human resources business partner. She previously was human resources manager at United Technologies Aerospace Systems in Phoenix and in Jamestown, North Dakota; and at Brandt Holdings Co. in Fargo, North Dakota, among other posts. She holds a bachelor’s in mass communications from Minnesota State University.

Susan Phillips has joined Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa as director of spa.
“Under Phillips’ direction, the Sonoran Spa interior will be refreshed; new treatments and services will be developed, taking advantage of the fresh ingredients available from the Spa Garden; and a Sonoran Spa Apothecary will be introduced to offer products based on local, desert botanicals,” says a news release from Westward Look.
Previously, Phillips held executive roles for three Auberge resorts as director of spa and wellness in Napa Valley, California, Santa Fe, N.M. and the San Diego area. She has also been retail director at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, led the retail division for Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa and was a director of retail for El Monte Sagrado Resort & Spa in Taos, N.M. She also was a buyer, manager and art dealer for Native American art galleries in Tucson.

Breast cancer group promotes Kellman
Anita Kellman has been promoted to the position of patient navigator for the offices of Breast Center of Southern Arizona.
Kellman, who joined the practice in 2006, will guide patients “through and around barriers in the complex cancer care system to ensure timely treatment and support,” the center said in a news release.
Kellman is the founder of Beat Cancer Boot Camp, a Tucson-based nonprofit organization.

Banner-University tabs Carr chief officer
Dr. Gordon Carr, critical care medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson, has been named the hospital’s chief medical officer.
He succeeds Dr. Andreas Theodorou, who recently was named regional medical officer over Banner Health’s three academic medical centers in Tucson and Phoenix.
Carr is a pulmonologist and intensivist in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine within the University of Arizona department of medicine. He joined the faculty in 2011, starting out as medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at University of Arizona Center–South Campus, now known as Banner–University Medical Center South.
He came to Tucson from Chicago, where he worked at several medical centers.

A recent hiring at Arizona Public Media (AZPM): Sandra Riggins, general sales manager, replacing Dana Horner, who retired earlier this year. Riggins was an advertising manager with the Arizona Daily Star and the former Tucson Citizen for 17 years. She has held management positions with the Miami Herald, Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the Marin Independent Journal. She received the Charles Horne Lifetime Achievement Award for advertising.

Meyer received a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he received a scholarship to play basketball. County names Poirier planning official
Pima County’s Development Services Department has appointed Chris Poirier as planning official. Poirier served as deputy planning official for the past eight years, and has worked for the department since 1999.
He has a bachelor’s degree in regional development and a master’s degree in planning from the University of Arizona.
He will coordinate all land-use and zoning-code changes and oversee implementation of the Pima Prospers Comprehensive Plan. “One aspect of this plan I am extremely excited to address ... is promoting in-fill and re-use of land,” Poirier said in a news release. “Anyone who has lived here over time has witnessed the expansion of our urban and suburban areas. It is now time to take a hard look at promoting development in areas that already have infrastructure.”
He replaces Arlan Colton, who retired.

Mandarino to lead new UA diabetes center
Lawrence J. Mandarino will lead the new UA Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
He also will be chief of the new Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the UA College of Medicine–Tucson.
Mandarino comes to the UA from Arizona State University, where he was director of the Center for Metabolic Biology and director of the Mayo/ASU Center for Metabolic and Vascular Biology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.
His research is aimed at treating insulin resistance syndrome, which increases the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, “all of special concern in the Latino population,” the UA said in a news release. In 2009, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Cure Award.

Her tenure also includes serving more than three years as chief operating officer of the Tucson division of Standard Pacific Homes, a publicly held company, during the acquisition of Miramonte Homes in 2004 through 2007.
Mastriani joined Miramonte in 1996, “and now joins the ranks of only a few women-led homebuilding and construction companies in Arizona,” the company said in a news release.

Star promotes Lolwing to new position
The Arizona Daily Star has promoted Mark Lolwing to director of circulation and consumer innovation.
Lolwing, whose previous title was audience development sales manager, came to the Star in 2007 from the Chicago Tribune, after working in marketing research at Millward Brown International. He received a bachelor’s in marketing from Northern Illinois University and an MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management.

Crest Insurance names Baena as development VP
Crest Insurance Group LLC has named Cristina Baena as vice president of business development.
Baena was originally hired in May 2014 as a producer in the employee benefits division of Crest. Before joining Crest, she was the marketing and funding coordinator for the Tucson Conquistadores and played golf professionally for several years.
She graduated from the University Of Arizona Eller College Of Management with a bachelor of science in marketing and general business. While at the UA, Baena was a member of the NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship Team in 2000.

Star promotes Shaffer to new position
The Arizona Daily Star has promoted Cindy Shaffer to director of people and culture.
Shaffer joined the Star in 2014 as senior human resources business partner. She previously was human resources manager at United Technologies Aerospace Systems in Phoenix and in Jamestown, North Dakota; and at Brandt Holdings Co. in Fargo, North Dakota, among other posts. She holds a bachelor’s in mass communications from Minnesota State University.

Rialto foundation selects Ragland for development
Julie Ragland has joined the Rialto Theatre Foundation as development director to spearhead membership, charitable giving, sponsorship/underwriting and community engagement efforts.
She brings 15 years of local nonprofit experience, having worked at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, the Birth & Women’s Health Center, the Fox Tucson Theatre, Tohono Chul Park and most recently as senior donor relations associate at the Center for Biological Diversity.
Ragland holds a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Arizona.

Westward Look names Phillips as spa director
Susan Phillips has joined Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa as director of spa.
“Under Phillips’ direction, the Sonoran Spa interior will be refreshed; new treatments and services will be developed, taking advantage of the fresh ingredients available from the Spa Garden; and a Sonoran Spa Apothecary will be introduced to offer products based on local, desert botanicals,” says a news release from Westward Look.
Previously, Phillips held executive roles for three Auberge resorts as director of spa and wellness in Napa Valley, California, Santa Fe, N.M. and the San Diego area. She has also been retail director at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, led the retail division for Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa and was a director of retail for El Monte Sagrado Resort & Spa in Taos, N.M. She also was a buyer, manager and art dealer for Native American art galleries in Tucson.

Breast cancer group promotes Kellman
Anita Kellman has been promoted to the position of patient navigator for the offices of Breast Center of Southern Arizona.
Kellman, who joined the practice in 2006, will guide patients “through and around barriers in the complex cancer care system to ensure timely treatment and support,” the center said in a news release.
Kellman is the founder of Beat Cancer Boot Camp, a Tucson-based nonprofit organization.

Banner-University tabs Carr chief officer
Dr. Gordon Carr, critical care medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson, has been named the hospital’s chief medical officer.
He succeeds Dr. Andreas Theodorou, who recently was named regional medical officer over Banner Health’s three academic medical centers in Tucson and Phoenix.
Carr is a pulmonologist and intensivist in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine within the University of Arizona department of medicine. He joined the faculty in 2011, starting out as medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at University of Arizona Center–South Campus, now known as Banner–University Medical Center South.
He came to Tucson from Chicago, where he worked at several medical centers.

Arizona Public Media announces a move
A recent hiring at Arizona Public Media (AZPM): Sandra Riggins, general sales manager, replacing Dana Horner, who retired earlier this year. Riggins was an advertising manager with the Arizona Daily Star and the former Tucson Citizen for 17 years. She has held management positions with the Miami Herald, Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the Marin Independent Journal. She received the Charles Horne Lifetime Achievement Award for advertising.

A recent hiring at Arizona Public Media (AZPM): Hildy Ko, television program director. She has worked in public broadcasting for 21 years. A former chef, she has worked at KING-TV, the NBC affiliate in Seattle, and KCTS 9, the Seattle/Tacoma PBS affiliate, in marketing, communications, development, traffic and programming. From 2012-13, Ko was on the Public Television Programmers Association Board.

Mac moves up at Arizona Lotus Corp.
Arizona Lotus Corp. has promoted Larry Mac to operations director of its KLPX (96.1 FM) and KFMA (102.1 FM) rock stations.
Mac has been with the company since 2007, as midday announcer and program director of KLPX.

He has more than 40 years of experience, at The Mutual Radio Network in New York City; NBC News, as a writer and editor for television and radio in New York and Washington, D.C.; and at National Public Radio, in posts including executive producer of “Talk of the Nation.”
Michaels is a previous news director at AZPM and was communications director for the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona.

The Tucson Jewish Community Center has added a staffer: Matt Meyer joins the center as director of sports and recreation. Meyer received a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he received a scholarship to play basketball. He has been involved in the athletic and recreation field for more than 15 years. Meyer is a sixth-generation Tucsonan, and Meyer Avenue in downtown Tucson is named after his great-great-great grandfather, Charlie Meyer.

The Tucson Jewish Community Center has promoted a staffer: Amy Dowe has been promoted to director of fitness. Originally from the Boston area, Dowe has lived in Tucson since 2000. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has worked at the Tucson Jewish Community Center since December 2009 as a group fitness instructor and most recently as health and wellness coordinator.

The Tucson Jewish Community Center has added a staffer: Tanya Rich was hired by the center as arts and culture coordinator. Rich, a printmaker, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in art history and a minor in fine arts. Rich is also the youth program director and exhibitions curator at The Drawing Studio as well as an independent art curator for local businesses in town; she also completed her third year directing the Tucson Sculpture Festival and curating for You and Your Big Ideas Gallery.

County names Poirier planning official
Pima County’s Development Services Department has appointed Chris Poirier as planning official. Poirier served as deputy planning official for the past eight years, and has worked for the department since 1999.
He has a bachelor’s degree in regional development and a master’s degree in planning from the University of Arizona.
He will coordinate all land-use and zoning-code changes and oversee implementation of the Pima Prospers Comprehensive Plan. “One aspect of this plan I am extremely excited to address ... is promoting in-fill and re-use of land,” Poirier said in a news release. “Anyone who has lived here over time has witnessed the expansion of our urban and suburban areas. It is now time to take a hard look at promoting development in areas that already have infrastructure.”
He replaces Arlan Colton, who retired.

Mandarino to lead new UA diabetes center
Lawrence J. Mandarino will lead the new UA Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
He also will be chief of the new Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the UA College of Medicine–Tucson.
Mandarino comes to the UA from Arizona State University, where he was director of the Center for Metabolic Biology and director of the Mayo/ASU Center for Metabolic and Vascular Biology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.
His research is aimed at treating insulin resistance syndrome, which increases the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, “all of special concern in the Latino population,” the UA said in a news release. In 2009, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Cure Award.

Gupta comes to CareMore from Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, where he was a patient safety and quality improvement fellow and internal medicine attending hospitalist.
He completed an internal medicine residency at Brown University and received a doctor of medicine from the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
